Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, March 18, 2006 Cold almost gone
Dear Everyone:
The weather improves each day and it is getting warmer. More than that we are having a wonderful year of beauty. Camellias in full bloom azaleas have begun, and as I said last week, the Bradford Pear trees look like snow. There are even some wisteria vines at Swan Lake showing blooms along with yellow Jessamine. How wonderful it is just to behold all of this---and to remember from whence it comes. We always have been known as a pretty town, and visitors have always bragged on Sumter's beauty.
My last couple of letters have been mostly taken up with promotions to Glory but just have two important ones this week---two ladies---Mrs. Mildr ed Ducom and Mrs. Louise (Mrs. John B) Duffie. Mildred's husband Paul died a few years back he was a wonderful resource for me on Sumter History---Mildreds bag was genealogy she and my sister used to spend hours and hours visiting cemeteries---researching all over and they were contributors to the good research center that we have now she was also busy as a mother and in her churches was Miss Louise Duffie. All Presbyterians will remember her participation in the choir, weddings and on and on. She also served in our church office as secretary for Dr. McLeod during those days Miss Louise was also known at other churches---she sang at the Temple for many years she and husband John built a house on Purdy Street in 1933. So I grew up and enjoyed these loving people for all of my life. Her son John is county engineer just now. Daughter is Mary Louise (Mrs. Folts) that lives in Texas. I have e-mail for most of these if you would like them. What busy lives the two ladies led here in Sumter and their contributions were great for all who knew or knew of them
Julie Dwight has some health concerns, and sorry to report that Laura Hutchins lost her balance and hurt herself pretty bad but is on road to recovery. Again, John Jones is looking good. In local politics. County Chairman Lewis Fleming will not run again as he is facing some serious health problems.filing for his seat is Larry Blanding. Larry was about Edmund 71-2 or 3 will make a good one. Politics are beginning as it is year of election no heat yet some county and state offices.no city yet as the election there is non-partisan. Louis Fleming was very active in the civil rights movement here in Sumter.
On Monday of this past week, we had a nice trip with Grace Baptist how good they are to me to invite me on their trips this one we did was of the High Hills of Santee.we started at Wedgefield but did not stop at the Welcome center as they have limited bathroom space.we did look at some wonderful views as we wanted to do this before the leaves are on the trees after that ---you cannot see as far. High light of this was the Historic Hills subdivision just off Meeting House Road, and of course maybe the finest view in the county that makes you think you are in the mountains is from Dr. Levis plantation San Souci. He has pavilion there that he rents for various functions you might want to consider this for your next shin-dig like weddings, receptions etc. If I can help you get in touch---Let us know. On this trip---we were to have lunch at Boykin(the general store no the Millpond )but it was closed on Monday so we went on over to Camden ate lunch at Magnolias (buffet good) and did a windshield tour of Camden.looked at the old Springdale race track that will soon host South Carolinas largest cocktail party a real upscale tailgate event---all the college students will be there---some dressed in the latest fashions ---some go every year and never see the horses. They are to busy seeing and hope they are being seen. Then we toured some of the older city.coming back home with a stop to see Miss Carrie at Lenoir's Store in downtown Horatio---this store has been there since 1820.you might want to drive up that way.Miss Carrie is as enjoyable as the old store---would make a nice outing for some of you all.before leaving this one want to say thanks to my friends at Grace Baptist for inviting me they have a big bus and a real safe and caring driver.have done a good many trips with them, and the Christian fellowship is wonderful. By the way you might want to look at living in this area call John M Brabham, Prudential they will take care of you!

Dear Bubba We hope you and your wife are well, and continued thanks for your weekly gossip and newssheet about your fine city and its citizens whom we were privileged to visit last year. Now you have had suggestions as to making a fine English cup of tea, we reckoned you must be provided with the recipe for cucumber sandwiches which accompanies the High Tea. This is a British invention, so please copy with great care.
1. cut the cucumber* into very thin slices
2 cover in half a teaspoonful of salt. Mix and put in co lander* Leave for 20 minutes
3 Taste a slice. If too salty, rinse in cold water and dry with kitchen paper
4. Butter eight slices of whole meal* bread. Place the slices of cucumber half on top of each other, on four slices of bread to form quite a thick layer of cucumber
5 Cover with the remaining slices of bread. Cut off the crust* and cut each sandwich into four triangles
