Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, March 18, 2006 Cold almost gone

Dear Everyone:

The weather improves each day and it is getting warmer. More than that we are having a wonderful year of beauty. Camellias in full bloom azaleas have begun, and as I said last week, the Bradford Pear trees look like snow. There are even some wisteria vines at Swan Lake showing blooms along with yellow Jessamine. How wonderful it is just to behold all of this---and to remember from whence it comes. We always have been known as a pretty town, and visitors have always bragged on Sumter's beauty.

My last couple of letters have been mostly taken up with promotions to Glory but just have two important ones this week---two ladies---Mrs. Mildr ed Ducom and Mrs. Louise (Mrs. John B) Duffie. Mildred's husband Paul died a few years back he was a wonderful resource for me on Sumter History---Mildreds bag was genealogy she and my sister used to spend hours and hours visiting cemeteries---researching all over and they were contributors to the good research center that we have now she was also busy as a mother and in her churches was Miss Louise Duffie. All Presbyterians will remember her participation in the choir, weddings and on and on. She also served in our church office as secretary for Dr. McLeod during those days Miss Louise was also known at other churches---she sang at the Temple for many years she and husband John built a house on Purdy Street in 1933. So I grew up and enjoyed these loving people for all of my life. Her son John is county engineer just now. Daughter is Mary Louise (Mrs. Folts) that lives in Texas. I have e-mail for most of these if you would like them. What busy lives the two ladies led here in Sumter and their contributions were great for all who knew or knew of them

Julie Dwight has some health concerns, and sorry to report that Laura Hutchins lost her balance and hurt herself pretty bad but is on road to recovery. Again, John Jones is looking good. In local politics. County Chairman Lewis Fleming will not run again as he is facing some serious health problems.filing for his seat is Larry Blanding. Larry was about Edmund 71-2 or 3 will make a good one. Politics are beginning as it is year of election no heat yet some county and state offices.no city yet as the election there is non-partisan. Louis Fleming was very active in the civil rights movement here in Sumter.

On Monday of this past week, we had a nice trip with Grace Baptist how good they are to me to invite me on their trips this one we did was of the High Hills of Santee.we started at Wedgefield but did not stop at the Welcome center as they have limited bathroom space.we did look at some wonderful views as we wanted to do this before the leaves are on the trees after that ---you cannot see as far. High light of this was the Historic Hills subdivision just off Meeting House Road, and of course maybe the finest view in the county that makes you think you are in the mountains is from Dr. Levis plantation San Souci. He has pavilion there that he rents for various functions you might want to consider this for your next shin-dig like weddings, receptions etc. If I can help you get in touch---Let us know. On this trip---we were to have lunch at Boykin(the general store no the Millpond )but it was closed on Monday so we went on over to Camden ate lunch at Magnolias (buffet good) and did a windshield tour of Camden.looked at the old Springdale race track that will soon host South Carolinas largest cocktail party a real upscale tailgate event---all the college students will be there---some dressed in the latest fashions ---some go every year and never see the horses. They are to busy seeing and hope they are being seen. Then we toured some of the older city.coming back home with a stop to see Miss Carrie at Lenoir's Store in downtown Horatio---this store has been there since 1820.you might want to drive up that way.Miss Carrie is as enjoyable as the old store---would make a nice outing for some of you all.before leaving this one want to say thanks to my friends at Grace Baptist for inviting me they have a big bus and a real safe and caring driver.have done a good many trips with them, and the Christian fellowship is wonderful. By the way you might want to look at living in this area call John M Brabham, Prudential they will take care of you!

Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday March 11, 2006 Spring
Dear Everyone

Sumter is becoming clothed in beauty camellias are beginning to peak, and our many Bradford pears have us looking like it must have snowed. We have just a sprig of yellow Jessamine and see some blooms on this soon the woods will be full of this South Carolina State Flower. Also we are attending some things like club meetings that only meet once a year got a call on one yesterday to be on the program in about 30 days. My experience in the past has been that most of these things are over around June 1st. The Iris Festival will be here before you know it.do not know what plans are in the works this year but as you know, the big Iris Festival parade is in our past. Right along people give me some old photos and particular slides of this big celebration. The Iris Festival is the oldest in the State with the first one being in 1940.

Several promotions to Glory and for us in 45 we have lost just recently Jack Floyd and a girl named Mildred McDuffie do not believe that Mildred finished when we did remember her from a class that was taught by Miss. Charlie Cassells---Mrs. Cassells seemed to be our oldest teacher and bet she was not my age at that time.maybe old people are younger now! Here is e-mail about our class: My husband Charles R. Tisdale (class of '39 Boys High School in Sumter) passed away on Friday, March 3, 2006. He had been having some health problems but recently was able to enjoy life here in central Florida. He was only critically ill for one day, for which we are very thankful. Funeral services were held in Tavares, Florida with interment in the Florida National Cemetery. Charles was 83, a World War II/Korean veteran. He retired from the Navy and Federal Civil Service. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Peebles Tisdale, two sons, Charles Wayne (Linda), Jacksonville, Florida, Warren Lafayette (Susan), Norfolk, VA., one daughter Annette Tisdale of Leesburg, Florida and four granddaughters. Two sisters, Harriet Wertz and Louise Gleason of Sumter, S. C. A memorial service will be held at the Lewis Chapel Methodist Church on March 25, 2006 at 11:00 am, with Rev. Lee Phillips and Rev. Jerry Watson presiding. Memorials can be sent to HOSPICE of Lake/Sumter, 12300 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, Florida 32778. Bubba, I would appreciate you "passing" this along to our friends and relatives in Sumter if you can. You can reach me by email if necessary. Thank you. My regards to Miss Barbara and I hope your flu bug has flown the coop. Margaret Peebles Tisdale

Two of the next generation were promoted this week Bobby Terry passed on leaving wife Marcy (Spencer) and three little girls. His parents were Clifton (Spec) and Mary Jennings Terry both (I think Edmunds 43)She wrote the food column for THE STATE for a number of years Bobby was contractor and one time was in the food business And then William McNeal Jones son of Billy Jones and Marty Upshur Marty now (Mrs.. Stewart) resides at Garden City Beach McNeal has a brother Blanding that is a doctor and student at Emory in Atlanta

Mayor Bubba, John Peter "Pete" Richardson was promoted to glory on February 22, 2006. Pete, Julian Seale(Edmunds class of'65) and I roomed together our Senior year at The Citadel. Pete lived his entire life in Summerton, was very active in civic affairs and served on the city council. Pete was a descendant of six governors of South Carolina, one of which signed the executive order establishing The Citadel. The burial service was at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Rimini, on Friday, February 24th. Bates Folley,'69. (Thanks Bates---Bates lives in Augusta Ga. Brother Jack is in Charleston as is Julian Seal think maybe Mitzi is in Columbia.)

Also promoted this week was Ann Prentiss Moore Lewis husband was Ed Lewis they spent most of their years together in the Air Force lived right there on the left as you turn off Lewis Road going to County Club. Ann grew up in the big house that was on the East side of Second mill big two story house that you could see on NE corner of the pond later these were apartments then all removed from property last year you notice Ann's middle name was Prentiss.some of us remember very well her father O. C. Moore and how he ran a big operation called the Polly Prentiss they employed a lot of people downtown on the corner of Hampton and Sumter Street (Cantey-Plowden, the Hurst Sexton)_Polly Prentiss made bedspreads sold all over the U. S.Ann was a school teacher/librarian and was Librarian at Covenant Place before she moved to a residential home in Columbia she and Ed had three children girl and 2 boys (one of they boys works at Covenant Place).Ann had a brother Otis who finished Edmunds 43. Went to West Point became a Air Force General officer now retired and uses a wheel chair thought the Polly Prentiss and the home on second mill would bring back memories for a lot of you!

Hello All, Are you kin to folks in Lee County? If you are, then you just might be interested in the Bethany Baptist Church Reunion Reenactment being held on Saturday, April 8. Take a look at the old photo at: http://www.infochunk.com/Index.htm You just might find some kinfolks there. Maybe you'll even recognize someone who hasn't been identified yet. I don't happen to have any blood line connections but I am friends with some folks who do, so I plan to go and help out. Hope to see you there, Cindy Parker (Bubba note Cindy does such a great job at this sort of thing thanks Cindy)

Mayor Bubba, I have recently moved "back home" to Sumter after 40+ years of being away. I bought the Osteen house on Hasel Street and it has been in that family for 70 years. Glad to get back to my old neighborhood. I spend all my time unpacking boxes and will get involved in historical preservation as soon as possible. Did I hear of a new organization "Historic Sumter"? Would like to be involved. I have joined the Genealogy Society and the Sumter Gallery of Art and will join others later. Looking forward to helping you in any way I can. I had sent $50 to buy the Sumter Cemetery book and never heard a word. Anything on that or anyone I can call? Please hurry and get over that nasty mess you have. Le Whitney (formerly known as Mickey Stubbs, Class of 1957) Bubba note: I am sorry I ever ran this notice about the book. 4 lost there money) But Welcome home Mickyoop-sLe Whitney! Kyle & Susan Osteen moved from this house to the Lad and Anne Boyle house he has been sick but say he is better!

Dear Bubba, I would appreciate if you would give the following information about The Alice Boyle Garden Center. The Sumter Council of Garden Clubs will be renting the building for receptions, small parties and business meetings. The Azalea Garden Club will have the first year starting in May 2006.We felt the center is such a nice place, and we have been letting groups have bridal luncheons and etc. The center needs to be used more often and is at a beautiful location. The second year of rental will be Bland Garden Club, and the third year will be Poinsett Garden Club. The contact garden club members starting in May will be: Azalea-Laura Ruth Baker (773-3158), Grace Prescott (934-8850), Debra Gibbs (481-0469), Eileen Gardner (481-2281) and Brenda Pruitt (469-0088). The contracts for rental have been published for all that are interested. Thank you so much for letting us share this information, Jackie Gamble, President of the Council of Garden Clubs of Sumter.

Just to let you know that "The Tempests" are planning another reunion/party for Saturday, April 29 at the Old American Legion Building on Artillery drive. This location is where many of us back in the high school days(Edmunds & Sumter High) attended dances following home football games so it should bring back a lot of nostalgic memories for all. As you recall, we had our first band reunion in over thirty years back in June of last year at the Elks Club and everyone who attended seemed to have a good time, so we decided to do it again this year.. As last time, all the original band members will be there which includes: Bryan Hatfield (trumpet/vocals), Kurt Weatherly (trumpet), Jim Jones (drums), Bill Brown (bass guitar), Jim Brown (lead guitar), Warren Moise (keyboards/vocals/arrangements), Gantt Williams (vocals/drums), plus B.J. Caughman (our new found sax/vocals), and of course the "Doo Wop Girls". Our friends Hank Martin and Rob Crosby (side note: Warren, Jim B., & I played with Rob in a band called "Crosby" many moons ago) may also join us for a few songs. Spread the word. Should be a fun time for all. Anyone seeking additional information can contact me, Waverly Williams, Annette Adams, Fairey Ann Hatfield, or Frank Edwards.

Quickies construction over on Miller road being widened and sidewalk additions near the Y---needs improving. and is going on. construction has started on doing over the terrible corner of W. Liberty and Lafayette. Should be easier for trucks to make this turn Bridge Construction..Cains Mill and some others you can see the work on old Maxwell Bros. Building cleaning out old Lawson & Sumter Creamery (Blue Ribbon Dairies)_--Kell Compton says the old Ryttenburg Buildings on Liberty will soon be in Landfill ok with me as somehow our mission is not to keep or preserve anything---just not in the plan except on paper---so the fight is out of me but looks like restrooms are underway at Swan Lake---Out of space got to go. Like always, God Loves you and memo charge just loves you for being you you do not even have to be good sometimes he seems to love us even more when we are bad Praise God---give some away and get more and more and more Love from 208

Love 208

The Purdy Street News Love from 208, Saturday March 4, 2006---Cold today

Dear Everyone

It is after 8. Getting this out late sorry but I have all the symptoms of having the flu so will not breathe heavy on my computer as I get this out. Ache all over and seem to be cold did throw up yesterday. Plan is to take it easy and stay home so we will not give this to others. The Kiwanis Club is now serving pancake breakfast. But we will not make this nor will we be going to the Jewish Heritage day celebration and dinner. We are really sorry we missed these two but want to get better as I feel bad. No ---I did not get flu shots it seemed to me that it was hard to get this yearand when I heard you could get them I just failed to make the effort.

Did make some things this week---on Monday we took a tour with the staff of the Museum to Wedgefield drove down the old Wilmington to Manchester RR bed on the section that the Yankees blew up the train. Then lunch at Batten's. Took a look see at some of the other high hills and back home---may do this again on the 13th with a seniors group from Grace Baptist.they are very good at inviting people if they have room.so keep that in mind. After another 30 days there will be too much foliage to see some things. If you are interested let me know.

Steel is going up on new Library, and do not have the dates but they will be inviting everyone to the O'Donnell House for a look at their temporary home. Maybe I will have this by next week.

Wrote a story for THE ITEM this week on the Sumter County Courthouse and have submitted a picture. The current courthouse will be 100 years old in November 1907.just sort of doing this to see if there will be any interest by the Bar Association or County Council. You need to sort of built up to these events.there are some good histories at the research center and I have some good stuff.

Also the First Presbyterian Church had its first service and dedication in November 1907, and pretty sure we will have some sort of celebration!

Right next to my location at the Sumter County Museum is a paper mache horse. Durant Hardware on Main Street originally owned this horse. Durant Hardware went out of business in the late 30s. They were located in a store that is now the home of Imports LTD (Willie and Emma Singleton. When Durant went out of business the next business here in my memory was Brown Furniture Company. Later on Brown Furniture moved over on Dugan Street in a building that was built for Eden's Super Market. ---now, lets go back to the horse. Bruz Crowson was by the museum and took a picture of the horse as he is now on the outside of the building and needs some repair. After the picture came out in the paper, we got a nice note from Mrs. Mary Anderson who lives in the Burrough House at Stateburg. Miss Mary (as I call her) says her Mother Mrs. Walter White bought to horse from Durant Hardware when they closed the store. The Whites moved the horse to Ohio where they had a home, and put him in the barn with other horses they owned. Miss Mary says that her mother said that this was the best-behaved horse that they had. She eventually brought Durant (Bruz Crowson caption on THE ITEM picture) and gave him (or her) to the Sumter County Museum. Durant was being stored inside, but the ladies here say he has become infested, so for the safety of other historic materials, they have moved in out on the porch. There he is today the museum would like to move him inside but are afraid that he---or what he contains---just would not be safe. so what they are looking for is a large freezer or to place Durant in for about 3 months. By doing this, all of the harmful bugs will be killed. So what we are leading up to is this do you know of anyone that has a freezer that can hold this horse for about 90 days. Then he can once again be put inside. So would you please look around and see what you might find. There are not many towns with ice plants anymore. My friend Milford Sears was at one time the ex. Sec. of the Ice Manufactures association. maybe he will have a suggestion.

Right now---Durant looks sickly as some of his skin is coming off let me hear from you!

Mayor Bubba Pat Towery and I were playing golf yesterday, when Pat received a call that his brother Mike had been in a serious automobile accident on Interstate 77 in Columbia. Both Mike and his wife Sue are in intensive care at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. I will keep you informed when all their tests are in

.This was sent to us by Billy Hall.no further reports ---did not see anything in the paper this morning.thanks Billy

Good Morning Bubba, Marty Upshurolder son, McNeil Jones, died this week in Tampa, Florida. Marty may be reached at Martha P. Upshur, PO Box 165, Murrells Inlet, SC 20576 or at martyu2000@yahoo.com... Her younger son, Blanding U. Jones is completing his Heart Surgery Residency at Emory University...Thanks, Grady (Grady is Dr. Grady Locklear).thanks

Good news.John and Ginger Jones are coming home one son drove up and has loaded all their goods and they will be coming home should be here by now. Other son is coming back with them by airplane. They are both so grateful and thankful for your support and prayers. Ginger says no food at first as they must follow diet orders. They will be going back for some more treatments but again they thank everyone for their prayers and support. John will have to take it easy.

Have been to a number of things at Sunset Country Club in the past month or two the club is in good shape and things I have attended the food and service have been wonderful. If you are going to a night thing at Sunset.you might want to consider taking the old McCray Mill road route.then cutting on Lewis Road. The problem with going on the Pinewood Road is that the lighting is very bad---and the traffic is heavy on the Pinewood Road. I hope this will get reported to some of our public officials and they will do something about it. Several times a year things are held at Sunset that includes Shaw for some the directions are difficult and some additional lighting would be helpful believe our city and county can do this or if not would someone report it to our delegation. Thank you.

I was guest speaker this week on Thursday night for the Gay Garden Club at the Alice Boyle Garden Center---this is just west of Swan Lake. Had a good time with all the ladies and was served a delicious catered meal(will try to get their names as it was well done and good)during the announcements a report was made that the board of the Garden Club has made the decision to start renting the building the first of May to help with maintenance and expenses.guidelines and prices will be forthcoming.the building is in good shape and may be what you are looking for in planning a meeting or an event. Just another facility for you to consider. Hope this will be good venture for this grand club that strives along with others to make Sumter Beautiful
