Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday November 4, 2006 Pretty Fall
Dear Everyone
Well---guess you all know that I did not have the operation this past Tuesday as I thought I would. Had it mixed up---but we did report to Carolinas Hospital in Florence. We pulled out of the driveway at 208 at 8:31. We were inside the hospital by 9:30 and spent the day---either we were getting tested (blood work Cat scan etc) it seems that everyone was running behind, and then our Doctor had an emergency) We got to see him about 3 in the afternoon---but much of this was waiting for test results. He had good news as some things were not as bad as we had expected so we will have 4 by-passes on next Wednesday Nov. 8, ---we will report at 6 AM after we got this scheduled, we reported to the day hospital and went through the process of pre-registration for next Wednesday, surgery will be that morning---spend the night in intensive care followed by 5-6 days in rehab..and then home and possibly rehab here at Tuomey that is out on Alice Drive & Wesmark then it should all be over and maybe I can start with something on our back. Some that have had this surgery say they feel better almost before getting out of hospital and some say they never had any pain at all. So. looking forward to getting all this behind us. We want to thank everyone for your wonderful support and prayers we feel like that we will be surrounded by prayer and will be in God's hands---what better hands could we be in? Thank all of you we have gotten some e-mails and cards from folks we have not heard from in a long time. Some are from Edmunds Grads that I did class reunions for a few years back and some are from real old friends who I only see or hear from every few years. I am very grateful to churches and prayer groups thank you and I shall use your love by sharing it with others.
Promoted to Glory this week was J. P. Brougfhton. Very active in the association of Prisoners of War had me out one time to be part of the state meeting at his house he was a successful businessman wonderful family man, and was famous for berry growing (like blackberries etc) he got so good at this that Clemson sent some folks to study how he did it (for you old timers---his Dad was game warden and in the deep deep swamp of the Wateree is Broughton's Mound.
I am not sure where this island do not want to go there but the hunters will tell me.
Also promoted to Glory was Dave Lietky---he came here with one of our industries and made this his home after retirement he last lived in Sumter at Covenant place, moving to the beach to be near a daughter that taught school in Georgetown County we played some golf from time to time nice pleasant fellow
The new Black funeral home on Broad has had no activity since Marvin Scarborough was promoted to glory, but understand there is some real interest developing even had a Black minister to ask me who to contact. Bubba Rabon was involved in this and talked to him this week seems there also may be a deal in the making on the Big Jims, Cathy. the Mr. Bs location. Lot of restaurant activity just now.and everyone in the development business has something on the plate think you will see another chicken place near Shaw, and development is taking place in the Wesmark and downtown area. Katrherines on Main is doing good and the Brick Street Coffee establishment on Caldwell and the Cut Rate on Main has their regulars, doing ok. Lots of excitement downtown with most. Understand the target date on the Thompson building has now been set as March 2007 shapes up a little more everyday---do not know all the plans yet but everyone says it will wonderful for offices and some more things. This building has had a lot of occupants since it closed during the depression years. Guess I need to be calling this Hampton @ Main
You can talk to almost any developer or real estate person in Sumter and they cannot hide the excitement they seem to feel a lot of it is based on Third Army being located at Shaw and some housing is being built for this market we have been through some bad times with our industries closing and nothing along these lines just now Wal-Mart second store is causing a lot of speculation as to what we can expect and restaurant slogans next to I-Hop is hiring help just now and one or two others are said to be closing deals almost daily.understand that the Faster-Care has added on and many doctors are adding additional services at their offices.and some things are always happening at our own Tuomey
Locating in the old Suburban Propane building just north of the Post Office on N. Main is a new doctors office it is the Women's Healthcare of Sumter---Dr. Ronnie W. Dennis OB-GYN and Karen K Brinson, PA-C, The building has been done over and sure looks nice Suburban is now on S. Pike===by pass.
TV ads for the politicians are about to wear all of us out and advertising seems to be more mud slinging than ever we have already voted as 65 and older can vote absentee My peer group of most older folks seem to think that the county council vote on new monies for Sumter County may be in trouble due to the water park.but others---and some of our good leaders think it will be great and should pass some good folks supporting this.but think the silent majority may not have been heard from we will know on Nov. 8th

(Sumter, SC) The University of South Carolina Sumter announced Monday, October 30, 2006 the return of intercollegiate athletics to the campus. In August, USC Sumter Dean C. Leslie Carpenter sought comments and suggestions from both internal and external audiences regarding sports on campus. After studying many successful intercollegiate athletics models for other two-year institutions such as USC Sumter, Dean Carpenter made the decision to pursue a sports program beginning in Fall 2007. Athletic programs flourished at the USC Sumter campus in the 1970s with successful programs ranging from baseball and basketball to golf and tennis. "We firmly believe that the return of competitive sports at USC Sumter will not only positively affect our enrollment, but will have many other benefits for the institution, our students and the community we serve," Dr. Carpenter said. For more information please contact Misty Hatfield, director of marketing and public relations, at 803-938-3728, hatfielm@uscsumter.edu or Bruce Blumberg, athletic director,at 803-938-3838, bruceb@uscsumter.edu.
Two things on Progress Energy they will be around changing your electric meter if you are on their service.this will enable the company to read your meter from the office and will eliminate the meter readers. They were by the museum this week ours at 208 was done this week bet they took less than five minutes---we will have to reset time on digital clocks but this time we will not have to set the one in the car another thing that is in the newspaper is that Progress Energy has a contractor trimming trees on West Hampton and trees in the historic district---but I am not going into that as we have protested several times in the past so I am not going to put myself through this again maybe it would help to have the meetings and protest ahead of time rather than after the cutting.think we have been over and over the tree ordinance. Progress Energy is a good company with good people.
We missed Halloween as we were at the hospital in Florence getting home after 7 but understand it was considered a real success everywhere did get one e-mail that said for downtown a merchant or two did not like it as the city closed off Main for the entire day---maybe another plan for next year. Think this will be an issue in the next week or so!
Dear Friends: The portrait of Colleen was unveiled last Thursday at The Opera House with almost 80 people in attendance. I have had many people who were unable to attend ask where they might see the portrait. Right now it is on display at The Artists Colony along with the first portrait of Shorty Holmes-the first Sumter Smiles portrait to be unveiled. I invite you to stop by to see both portraits.
