The Purdy Street NewsLove from 208, Saturday October 14. 2006 FallBeautiful!

Dear Everyone:

We are still undergoing some tests to see if we might be able to stand some back surgery.  All the doctors and nurses have been so nice to us and all are such professionals that we feel our care could not be better. We spent the day at Tuomey on Wednesday what wonderful care we enjoyed. We will have to have some other test, and if all goes as well as it has so far, we feel that soon we will be over a lot of our hurt and will have a better quality of life. We would like to say thanks to all.

Bubba,I don't know if you saw the obituary in Saturday's Item but my wife Alenda was 'Promoted to Glory' on October 5th. This is the same day her mother died on Haynsworth Street 17 years earlier. She thoroughly enjoyed your Newsletter and information about her beloved Sumter and its people. Even though we have lived in Raleigh, NC for 38 years, she always proudly responded to the question of 'where she was from?' with SUMTER, SOUTH CAROLINA. So,Ithank you very much for sharing the news and stories which gave her great pleasure. (we missed the obit--) You can remove her from your distribution list (aburdette@nc.rr.com) Charlie.

Earlier this week, Milford Sears was promoted to Glory he was such a nice person went to work for Sumter Ice & Fuel when he returned from WW2---looked after the ice side of the business, and then served this industry through the ice makers association. was model for all of us ith nice manner she was good for me as I researched old Sumter with regards to ice he lived the good life dedicated to his God and family ain't no better than this! He will be missed.

Dear Bubba: Thanks for telling folks about the Sumter County Cultural Commission's art project, Accessibility: Sumter's International Sculpture Symposium. Just walk or drive slowly along the Haynsworth Street side of the Sumter County Cultural Center to watch them carve, grind, andchip away. The artists are from Peru, Argentina, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Canada, Estonia and Sumter. The brightly painted totems are a result of a school residency by the artists from Peru and Argentina. They are scheduled to finish by October 19 and we'll celebrate beginning at 6 pm with performances by the Lemira Percussion Ensemble, the Furman and Crestwood choral groups, belly dancers and fire eaters! Mr. ONeal Baker came by to see us he says that the first person buried in Evergreen Cemetery on the corner of Wise and Guignard is a lady named Izora Tibbsshe was buried 4-30-1950 in the Iris Garden Section lot 413 space 3. Mr. Baker says that there is no marker for this grave,  and he does not know any of her kin, or who might have buried her he is seeking any relatives or friends. a marker would cost about $1400 and he has some contributions but would like to contact the family for permission and thinks they would perhaps like to contribute. just now, I do not have the time, but feel certain I can get something from THE ITEM archives. if you know of anything please call us at 803-775-2851send us an e-mailor contact Mr. Baker at 2249 Bethel Church Road, Sumter, S. C. 29154 his phone # is 803-481-4472--- Mr. Baker. how good it is of Mr. Baker to do this thanks please talk slowly as Mr. Baker and I are both hard of hearing!

Dougs folks are Jim and Martha Alexander who used to be here with Chamber. Hello to them from all of us!

Just got e-mail from Shelly Galloway from School Dist 17 have not had time to read it yet will try to include her computer address in case some of you want the news on the doings in School Dist. 17.they are underway with another good year.

Again this week we are doing this on Friday as we want to go to the football game tonight.  There have been some good games on the TV, but sometimes are to late for us at 208. Will try to keep you all up on some things here in old Sumter there are a lot of ads on TV for elections and some meetings here to meet the candidates----some emotion---some don't care---and will not vote. I would predict a small turnout as some seem to not like anyone---this country works as people choose. Hope you will vote. Be sure and register if you have not.

Our churches here in Sumter are all doing wonderful work. Choose one and join in praise and worship.  You will be glad you did.  Attend with your children, it is a wonderful feeling better than aspirin. God Loves you and we do also.

Love from 208
