Love 208

The Purdy Street News Love from 208, Oct. 21, 2006 Time for Changing the clock!

Dear Everyone,

Next week it will be time to change the clock.  I guess we will get back on real time and it will take all of us a while to get adjusted. It is just like when we go from 2006 to 2007 some of us will still be dating things with 2006 and of course before long we will get up one morning in freezing weather. We are trying to change out some of our clothing but somehow we always just do a few things as we think the weather will turn back warm and old time Sumter weather---you can be sure that it will. We have been to a couple of football games, did not wear enough clothes to one and then the one last week we were ok. This is pretty time of year---and the leaves are beginning to turn in upper S. C. and North Carolina. Reports are that it is not full yet but it will not be long. Few turning in our yard and we have a camellia that always blooms early. The rest of them will bloom in January. We also have a Confederate Rose. It is not real big this year and think it will be the first weeks in November before this one blooms.  Along these lines, if some of you take Sunday rides---try some of the back roads in the Ashwood section of Lee County and see if you can find any windmills left in this area. Also,  in going toward Mayesville turn to right under the bridge (by-pass) a fellow there has got a beautiful collard patch (of course I like collards). His patch is picture perfect.  Good picture for Chris Moore at THE ITEM---he is just full of energy and enjoys Sumter's history.

WE have had a number of promotions to Glory this week. I am going to have to go back and review. Hope I do not miss anyone.  Dr. Kirk Smith,  that used to be at !st Baptist. He sure looked after his flock, was a wonderful beacon in our town. I use to enjoy his columns in the paper. Always a message for me!(of his children guess I knew Stan the best---see him on TV on occasion as he works for Lexington County Sheriff.  Then Mrs.. Hamor died..she was very active at Alice Drive. Some of her friends have called and shared with me, what a wonderful lady she was---

Two of my friends I used to see at the Cut-Rate were promoted to Glory this week. One was Ashleigh Buddin, salesman for a wholesale restaurant supply house. We used to talk as he lived at the old Dr. Furman place near Bethel Church and owned the old Doc. Furman office that is still right there. Enjoyed Ashleigh---good man and then Jerry Jones was killed in an accident. He was minister of music at 1st Baptist at the Base and a number of other places. He was also a carrier for THE STATE newspaper and we were on his route. How good he was at this! I lost a real good friend upon his promotion.

Hoyt Shuler,  Shulers Heating and Air, has been promoted to Glory. His daughter request me to wait until next week when she will send more details..  He was a gentleman. Good businessman. Loved his family and Sumter!

Please add Olivia Jackson to your prayer list. Thanks.

Just recently, I told my kids about the "moving buffet" at Duff's as we were traveling along Broad Street. I remember several Sunday afternoon visits. On a couple of occasions, our church (Howard Chapel AME in New Zion) took our senior citizens in appreciation of their dedication and services to the church. Several of my friends and I tagged along to assist with the senior citizens.  Duff's was located behind Red Lobster on Broad Street in the spot now occupied by the movie theater. Jennifer Howard Kelley Velvet Weible sent this in:  Fire Mountain is going to start having a breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sundays starting Nov. 4th at 7:30am....hope you will come and check it out. Dear Bubba, You are so right; they come down fast, especially with that big track hoe sitting out there, but the truth is they will NEVER be built back. These last few buildings on East Liberty are not significantly important , and I'm sure that nice buildings will replace them, as long as the Architects do their job as well as they did on the first two that were built on E. Liberty St. The design of these buildings must remain historically compatible with the other turn of the century buildings (the few that are remaining) which give our downtown it's character. I have not looked at the drawings of Joey's Seafood yet, but I have great confidence in the architect.  East Liberty is going to be pretty much a blank slate and I do hope they eventually build back on the North side of the street as the downtown prospers. Thanks for all you do to remind people of our local history. As always, Kell B. Compton

Big Announcement. I got to where I said that Katherine's would be open when it opened and it has.  I was there this past Monday for breakfast and radio program with Susan Trauch----much more to be done. but she is open by noon time the next day it seemed the lunch business had filled the restaurant. Food is good there, nice ---all new. You will love the way the building has been done over! Thanks to Kell Compton. He has a good feel for Sumter's history and it shows in his work. He is an excellent contractor ----

On Thursday night---Dr. Walter Edgar made a presentation for the Historical Society in the Witherspoon Building at the Sumter Count Museum. Big crowd. Maybe the most ever. He is just out with a new book. An Enclyopedia of South Carolina-----it has taken eight years and hundreds of people writing, editing, illustrating etc. It will be for sale at Waldenbooks at Sumter Mall. 1st printing has been sold out and second printing is expected to go very quickly--- he sold all that he brought last night(act quickly Waldenbooks will allow you a discount but this is for a limited time)you may have to reserve one or order---- what a prestigious thing it was for Sumter that he would come as the is #1 historian in our state. The Historical Society has had some wonderful programsI  Will tell you how to join and you need to join us at the Sumter County Museum Oyster Roast tickets now have a waiting list. Dr. Edgar said last night that Sammie Way and Sumter High Schools were leading the way for interest in the schools. Many teachers here for Dr. Edgar.  Sorry more of our political people were not, but getting sick of some of them from TV ads.

Hello Bubba, Please mention in "Love From 208" that Julian Frasier will present a program at November 30, 2006 meeting of the Sumter County Historical Society, entitled: "South Carolina Before the Civil War". I am sorry we did not ask you to mention Dr. Walter Edgar is to be with us at 7 this coming Thursday (19 Oct.). Thank you for your Christian witness. John (John Duffie) ---Julian is good. Don't miss it!

Some things---We were doing a story for the paper and drove around some in the Shaw AFB area. Hope some of our public officials will. We need 441 back of the base improved some and maybe widened as there is a lot more traffic coming. Know it has probably already been studied, but it takes a while to get anything done and the City is right, south Main is in horrible condition. So they will add some improvement.

Had a problem with some of my subscribers not getting e-mails that are on FTC---called upon Paul Holder and he got someone right away. FTC is excellent corporate citizen for Sumter.has been good server for us---does anyone have any idea how to get in touch with the customer service people at sc.rr.com, having some problems here and do not know how to get in touch.. Please let me know---and by the way, message to our Veterans organization friends,  please look at Flag Display near I-20 exit out of Florence. It sure makes a great statement. Will bring it up at one of our meetings. Have sort of taken it upon myself to see that worn out flags are replaced.  Thanks to RT's and many thanks to Carolyn Mansuetti who got the one down when Advantage Realty. Moved an left two old flags. Working with Kenny's car wash now. We do not need another flag flap spread all over TV.

Alice Drive Baptist Birthday this coming Sunday. One Service at 10, try them you will like this church! The view at the corner of Winn & Haynsworth has been blocked by a cut down tree. Understand that it will be removed shortly for safety purposes. Be sure and go see Sculpture at Patriot's Hall. A new experience for us in Sumter.

I have been referred to Dr. Dorn Smith in Florence and will see him again on October 31 when I will enter to have some by-pass Surgery. Thanks to all my Doctors and the Tuomey folks for sending me over for some much needed repair work. This should get us in good enough shape to see a surgeon about my back problems I Am very grateful to all these skilled people and my family, what an opportunity it is for us to get a chance to live a better quality of life and to Glorify God in whatever way he chooses for us do.  This was my thoughts when I had a stroke and cancer and that will be my continued goal to Glorify and Praise my maker. The surgery will be done in Florence on the 31st, will be there for recovery and rehab but hoping some of the rehab can be done here---all my friends and family have been and are very supportive. Before your ask, I told Dr. Smith I would get 20 to 25 second opinions from my coffee club. Many of whom have had same sort of problems.  So,  I do not need to see anyone else or get anymore second opinions. They are experts on all subjects.  If they can hear and remember the question!  Again, this is indeed a blessing, of course,  I am uneasy as I have not had this one. Will be an expert in a couple of weeks. Thank you for your Love, prayers and support. God loves each of you, we do also.

Love from 208
