Love 208

The Purdy Street News. Love from 208, Saturday Oct. 6, 2006 Beautiful Fall

Dear Everyone:

We have had some beautiful fall weather. Football game last Friday was little bit cool for the clothes that I wore to the gameguess the cooler weather will be with us for most of the games until the season is over.

Sometimes we get our columns in the paper and our newsletter mixed up. We wrote that we had a subscriber that wanted to know the name of the cafeteria near center court in Jessmine Mall---turns out it was the Apple House---it was a cafeteria. Mayor Bubba, The name of the cafeteria was the Apple House Cafeteria. I worked there in the early eighties.

Hope this helps. Thanks, Susan,  one lady wrote in name and then asked us to send her free tickets for a meal at Duffs. This was a cafeteria on Broad,  think it was about where Bojangles and the movie houses are just now, anyone remember???Thank youas well as I remember the food was placed on rotating tables and you picked what you wanted .as I remember the food was sort of like eating at a college run cafeteria---what do you remember??? And this---

Dear Bubba, What a nice article about Palmetto Plaza, etc you had for the paper this morning. Tom and I ate at the cafeteria in the mall a few times and he says it was named The Apple House!  I wonder if anyone remembers a
Hungry Bull restaurant on Broad St near where McDonalds is today, or is that just my imagination that it was there once? I believe it later became Dana's Restaurant because we had our wedding reception there. Cathy Powers

Hey Mayor Bubba.....just thought you'd like to know about the article on the Artist's Colony of Sumter in the October issue of Southern Living....very nice write-up ....and mentioned Brick Street Coffee Break, also.....check it out!......Barbara Gose--- The Goses have a new antique place on Main has not been open lately as they have been busy on Estate Sales. Hope they will let us know when they will be back. Want to look at the post cards they have!

Good Morning Mayor Bubba: I just felt the need to let you know that my mother-in-law Mildred Wessinger Tindal was promoted to glory Wednesday September 27. God blessed her with 92 years of service to him. She was married to Judge H.D. Tindal who preceded her in his promotion and has left two sons Henry (Hank) Drane Tindal and John (Joe) Joseph Tindal. I'm sure that there were some good stories about Tindal Station. She was my best friend and I'll miss her deeply. Judge Lee Tindal ---Bubba note: Tindal Station was on the old Northwestern RR---the trestle there gave way in 1928 and the locomotive fell into the swamp. Killed the fireman and Engineer. Also broke the Dam at second mill!

Promotions to Glory..Blanche Thompson Stewart---she was the mother and step mother of a number of my friends. They lived out in Britton Section. Also, we will miss Brudd McFaddin (Christian name Talbert E) as he was promoted to Glory. What a good delightful friend he was for us.  Also, enjoyed his wife who was Buster Tisdales daughter and their son Tem was always a delightful friend of mine..Brudd was very helpful to us on some history of Eastern Brick and Tile as he was long time employee and he would share some information from the Dabbs Cross Roads , Gable and Sardinia area. We will all miss him. Also sorry to report that Bill, Bernie (Grey neck) and Phyllis McElveen's father Wyatt was promoted to Glory. He always had a nice smile and was one of the nicest men that you would ever want to know.  His wife is living at McElveen manor.

Got a note from Russell Charles, Financial Advisor UBS Financial Services his Grandparents are Bette Jean & Kenneth Charles (Citadel '49). ---these folks have been friends of mine for 60 years + He says he is living in Florence and working in the Sumter office. Appreciate him calling lots of good memories for me!

Bubba: I saw J.R.'s comments about Pocalla in your last e-mail. Doc Dunlap at Summit Realty has the options to purchase the golf course. Plans are being formulated to create a residential subdivision on the golf course with commercial fronting Highway 15-S and hopefully around on Lewis Road. Preliminary plans call for approximately 300 homes on this site. Doc is also involved in The Cove at Second Mill that Frank Edwards wrote about last week. We are working with Sammy Way of Sumter High on naming streets after those from the Sumter community that lost their lives in war and some of these subdivisions will provide an opportunity to complete the project. Talmadge (Tobias)

Mayor Bubba, I tried to send you an email several days ago by replying to one of your newsletters that had been forwarded to me by Powell Black but I guess you did not get it.

Would you please mention in your next newsletter (if it is not too late) about our concert, The Three Redneck Tenors, on Oct. 10 at 7:30 at Patriot Hall? Tickets may be purchased at the door for $25 but we'd really like to encourage all live entertainment lovers to become season members. They can call me at 469-2114 or go to our website- sumtershawcommunityconcerts.org  for more information. Thanks so much. Betsy Ridgeway ( we are really blessed with a lot of talented people here in Sumter and it is a blessing to all of us that they would share with us.

By the way.when over at Patriots Hall you might want to look at some of the stone cutting and chain saw woodwork by visiting and local artist. These are being prepared on the grounds of Patriot Hall.  Remarkable work and think it will be           entertaining and educational for a lot of usI pass there almost every day and glimpse what is going on, thanks to our Artist and Cultural Community

Good news from the Shaw Community. Shaw and McIntyre have been selected to get new fighter aircraft. The F-35. As I understand this will be newest and best--- replacing most of the F-16's. Some of the older fighter pilots. (all who claim to be the best ever) will say that the F-16 will always be best with them. Understand that the F-35 will be #1 for 20 years + starting with 2009.

Korn Industries is scheduled to be closed at the end of this month according to reports. Nothing new on the industry front, retail seems to be growing here. Sumter National Bank had a formal announcement on Friday it will be known starting next Tuesday as Community Resource Bank. This is not a merger but a renaming of the Community group of banks in Orangeburg, Ridgeway, Florence and Sumter, no changes in people ---logo will change on the sign out front but same good people with same good service you know I believe in the last ten years. Investments in the sign company would have been better than banks. Understand that Eckerds will make some changes---someone has said that they believe Sumter has enough drug stores and banks. Maybe we need some more mobile or manufactured housing folks(just kidding)

Hundreds of third graders have been here to Museum.  The Jr. Welfare ladies do a program for them and they get a tour of the museum excellent program a wonderful service by the league and the Museum. Museum Oyster Roast is Nov. 16. I have sold out of my allotted tickets---we might be slow in filling your order if you send it to me!

Understand Wilson Hall is ready to show off improvements---our coffee club will visit next Wednesday but I cannot go, Doctors Appointment.  All of this I hope will lead toward some relief for my back. We have one or two signs of fall in our yard. Fall flowers, leaves turning, etc. If you can go to the mountains this time of year. Be sure and go. It is not a long drive beauty to behold!

Summer is over. Things like club and committee meetings are back on regular schedule last Sumter@Six next week it has been an excellent year of good music. Swan Lake is being decorated with lights.  Jaycees and the Evening Optimist Club are well underway with Christmas parade plans. Some of us old timers still wish for the Iris Festival parades with bands, floats, queensgood old days.  The Jaycees have not put on this parade since 2001 and people say it may be a long time for any of this to be considered. Summer is over.  God's love is not it is with all of us each and every day if you need some just ask.      Give it away and get more.

Love from 208
