Love from 208, Sept. 23, 2006

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday September 23, 2006 Tinge of fall

Dear Everyone:
I am starting this on Friday morning---and this has been my custom lately as Friday nights are for football---and as of this time, we still are not getting messages on one of our servers hope we will be up to speed before long on this but in meantime---we are missing a lot of messages that we usually send in this mail but nothing we can do about this---so we just will keep right on keeping on.This letter is a touch of home for a lot of you all. Regarding those that get this by U. S. Mail we have mailed your copy for the past two weeks we are getting some notices that some have made arrangements to receive Love by computer from family or friends have the mailing list and envelopes done ahead and we are editing this procedure. We knew it would take a mailing or so and this is working fine! Thanks again for letting me get some rest over the summer months

Good morning Mayor Bubba. Just wanted to let you know that my parents, Roy and Leola Harrington are now living at Covenant Place. Dad is in "Skilled Nursing" in room 1821. It has been very hard for both of them to give up their Phelps St. home after so many years. It would be great for anyone that knows dad to visit him and talk about the old days of bass fishing. I'm sure some reading your letter will remember "Roy's Hole" at Santee. Thanks so much for your weekly newsletter. Sandy Harrington Anderson, (brothers: Mike and Ronnie Harrington). (Think Mike is at Myrtle Beach?)

Hi, Bubba. Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Alice Drive will celebrate 50 years of service to God on September 24th. And we are in the process of locating charter members. Bubba, Mr. Pritchard came to EHS in fall of 1949 in a Nash automobile and also directed the chorus, in which I am glad my mother insisted I participate. Each early September session began with "Ah do ra mus te". We sang it until we attained the perfection he required. We all cared for and respected Mr. P and were upset to hear he would no longer direct the chorus my senior year (52-53). I am hazy on some details, but my mother's beloved Mr. Cliff Moise came to direct us that year. She and he had developed a professional respect and love for each other during her HS years (Girls High 1927). He called her "Sweet One". I shared this with some of my friends in the chorus who continued to address her lovingly by that name. Mr. Cliff cultivated a unique love and respect from us for a gentleman more than 5 times our age in 1953. Thanks for prompting many pleasant memories. John Duffie P.S. You probably remember Mr. Pritchard directing our singing of the EHS Alma mater at our 50th reunion in 2003.
Mayor Bubba....I read your newspaper article last Saturday in
which you said WIS was the first T-V station in South Carolina.... actually they
were the 4th. WCOS (now WOLO) was first. They signed on in May of 1953 and were
owned by the State Newspaper. WCSC (Wonderful Charleston South Carolina) in
Charleston was 2nd...they signed on in July of 53. WNOK (now WLTX) was
3rd...they hit the airwaves in September of 53. WIS didn't sign on until
November of 53. Just thought you'd like to know...J.R. Berry (a big
thank you) to J. R..but biggest thanks to him is for staying at the Radio
Station during Hugo. If it were not for JR broadcasting during Hugo none
of us would have known what was happening---or what to do thanks forever to JR
now anchor on 7 o'clock news & 11 news for WLTXColumbia)

Glory: John Nolan was killed in a Motorcycle accident just after he
left his job at Sumter Physical Therapy on Wilson Hall road. I knew him
when I was undergoing treatments there he was a lot of fun---John grew up part
of his life in Sumter, finished Hillcrest and was a soccer player

THE ITEM had some excellent Sumter News on Wednesday. Announced another Wal-Mart to be located on 15 south just before you get to Carolina Golden will take a year or so and there is a lot of talk about how other retailers will fare with this additional store. Also, some are concerned about traffic. Mayor Joe McElveen addressed these concerns in remarks in the newspaper. Also Ray Reich made a glowing report on what is to come in downtown and other reports on Sumter Business according to the newspaper. He does not rule out some interest in Sumter by Starbucks and Olive Garden. He also, said that a big announcement will be forthcoming in the downtown area. Some of the biggie retail stores are holding off as Sumter's per capita income is low---Reich also said that another upscale hotel is interested in a downtown location and more entertainment is being planned and regarding Katherine's. We say it will open when it opens. Predicted target dates have been missed a couple of times, also in THE ITEM have been stories on Sumter's effort with Columbia in following up on some contacts for the aircraft industry. I think that Mayor Joe and some of our leaders (such as Greg Thompson) are showing good judgment. It is true that downtown has a long way to go and some of our old industries are closing or moving elsewhere, but now is the time for us to emphasize some positives. Some seem to think we are doing a wonderful job with attracting retired folks. Any of you have thoughts of how we may improve in this area---it seems this is a goal of every town in the state.

There seems to be no slowdown in house building here THE STATE even had a story on the amount of activity here along those lines and some of our leaders expect more retired folks to be coming to Sumter not just military related but others.

Bultman House on Haynsworth and Salem is still a work in progress and right down the street owner Jim McQuage has signs in front of the old McLaurin home that he would like to sell. So there seems to be a lot of interest in what is the old inner city. A lot going on here with some fencing, pools, remodels etc. Some like older houses and in the next week or two I will talk to a Lady from Upstate New York, who is doing a lot of work on Dixie Hall on 261. It is said to be the oldest house in Sumter County. The new owners are interested in horses. I also will be guest on a program next month for the Newcomers Club many of them have been here several years. Good group!

I said something about Wilson Hall graduates out for college sports got this from Headmaster Fred Moulton: Mr. Mayor, Since you asked about players in college, I wanted to remind you that Clay Carruth, a 2003 graduate, is a senior on the team at The Citadel and will also be going to College Station today. He's finally getting some playing time after changing coaches each of the last three years. FYI, Wilson Hall has five members from the Class of '06 playing college sports: Richard Jones (The Citadel - baseball), Miller Moss (Clemson - Track and Field), Preston Kight (The Citadel - Cross Country and Track and Field), David Barr (Covenent College - Cross Country), and John Hunter Sheridan (USC - Football beginning spring semester as a walk-on). Talented group to graduate last year as these five make up 10% of the graduating class! Best to all, Fred Moulton

John Quackenbush told me he thinks Derrick Moore will be on traveling teams for The Citadel for this weeks game (Our grandson is on varsity this year #54 the center) By the way Wilson Hall improvements and changes look to be just about complete it is a good looking campus..
Wish I had some news for you all on Sumter High but really do not have a good contact there---hard to get in touch by phone you get a menu and when it says dial the number now, you get the menu over. Older folks are not adept at telephoning ----and while I am thinking about Football the program at the Y is really enjoyed by a lot of people and they brag on the speakers---call the Y and join this group early in the morning---same as tailgating!
This Sunday at 1st Pres. Denise Lynch will play our new grand piano with one of the most outstanding renditions of Jesus Loves Me. It is wonderful. You can hear it free by attending the 9 or 11 services. It just does not get any better than this!

We had quite a wonderful report from Derrick Burress on the Habitat Program. They have built 100 houses, milesstone. Sure do a lot of good things. Take your things to their store. I took some things when we downsized and if you can, support this program..
Fair is this week. I will go see the Chickens, hogs, mules, cattle and eat some of the French fries from the Potato house. But that is about all for me.
