Love 208

The Purdy Street News. Love from 208, Saturday Sept. 30, 2006. Beautiful Fall Day

Dear All,

This is being written on Friday and edited for distribution to you all early Saturday morning try to do this early so that I can attend Friday night football. We shared with you all before that grandson plays for Wilson Hall.  They play Porter Gaud from Charleston tonight at 7.it is mini-cheerleader night so many will be there. Wilson Hall has not fared so well in two out of town games with schools from Columbia. Sumter High also plays a school tonight from Columbiait is coached by Jimmie Noonan and they have a good record, but Coach Sorrels says the Gamecocks are ready to play a good game.
Hope all including Crestwood and Lakewood will have a good weekend. What a good game Thursday night with USC (Carolina) playing # 2 Auburn Tigers.it was well worth watching. Carolina seemed to play their hearts out and what a game to watch of course Clemson off to another good season---and beat up pretty good last Saturday on North Carolina. Both the SEC and ACC have excellent teams. Other colleges in SC have good teams also with programs getting better at Charleston Southern, Coastal (college at Myrtle Beach) and Francis Marion improving all the time. The Citadel will not play this week for a big check hope they will be good enough to win---With baseball winding down, football is on the tube every night, wish they would start about 6:30 or at the latest just after the news at 7.

Had note from #1AA Gamecock fan, Paula Stover sending us a new e-mail it did not say Go Cocks so wrote her about this. Seems that she has left Tuomey after a number of years and is now Director of Pharmacy at the Sumter Family Health Center. This is on Lafayette near its intersection with N. Main. Big building that was built for a super market. Wonderful looking building now as an observation Medical practice pharmacies, hospitals seemed to be changing all the time---a lot of it local Tuomeys expansion over Canal Street seems to have up all the steel work. Makes one wonder what might be next while on this. The valet parking is wonderful for us older folks. Thanks Tuomey for this and good care for all of us.

Do not have any reports on promotions to Glory but a number of folks are hospitalized, Buddy Hodge is in hospital message from Billy Hall says his mother had a fall and will take some time recovering. Phil Booth has had cataract surgery saw him and he is ok and well pleased with what has been done. Still in recovery stage from his recent stay of 33 days at Tuomey.  Robert and Frankie Dixon have been on Sick list at Presbyterian Home in Summerville and Nancy Sanders is not well at Covenant place

Here is good report from Helen Coker who was director at Covenant Place before going to the seminary: Dear Friends, This past Sunday Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington, SC voted me in as their Associate Pastor for Spiritual Formation and I wanted to share my joy with you as I look forward to this next stage of my adventure. I actually start work this Sunday!(Lexington is just east of Columbia, SC and right off of I-20 and I-26.) I have a contract on a precious house and will close this Friday morning; I am looking forward to unpacking my boxes and planting roots. I don't have all my contact info lined up yet, but will send that out when I do. My ordination service is planned for Oct. 22nd, at 6 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, SC and you are most cordially invited! I hope y'all are doing well and if you are ever in my neck of the woods, please let me know, I would love to have you over! Grace and peace, HHC

Following are some reports on places to eat. Logans Steak House on Broad across from Outback is advertising for help so is on the way to open. Nothing on Golden Corral---and this on downtown: Dear Bubba ,Thank You; Katherines will open when it opens; and it will be beautiful. We are hoping all the inspections will go well this week and she will be training staff and cooking for us insiders next week. Come see us. I'm nearly sure that the E. P. Ricker saloon was at the location of the new City Centre (25 N Main) As Always , Kell B. Compton (where Katherines will be is in old Bultman Shoe Buildingbuilt 1882is oldest on Main Street) and then this good news: Bubba, you mentioned in some of your fine writings the different restaurants soon to open including Roberts Bistro. I think there is a good article in the making there. Robert is Rob Towery, whose parents are Neil and Genie Towery who owned The Framery for years until they retired, and they are both pillars in the Church of the Holy Comforter. You probably know Dr. Mike Towery, Neils brother who is a retired dentist. Rob is an outstanding chef formerly with SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) in Charleston and will have fresh food to die for, almost next door to the new seafood restaurant. Hell probably teach them a thing or two. Incidentally, he prepares breakfast almost every Sunday at Holy Comforter along with Marvin Byerly. Cross the street some Sunday morning at 9 as my guest, and see what I mean. Robs wife, Stephanie is Director of Childrens Ministries at Holy Comforter and they have two little boys. Sometime in another life, it seems I remember a restaurant named the New York Caf, and one named Rainbow Restaurant. Recently you referred to one or the other as having been located on South Main and moving to East Liberty. Am I right? Robs restaurant will be in #16 East Liberty, and Pat and I went there for the blessing by Rev. Charles Walton, former Rector of Holy Comforter. I could see by the screw holes in the floor exactly where the bar stools or counter stools were placed, and I got to thinking about what all went on those stools and now the old building is going to have new life when the total remodeling is completed. This seems to be the whole story of whats being hoped for in downtown Sumter a native son and his family returning to Sumter and investing their lifesavings in a recyclable building to attempt to be successful, while improving the old downtown at the same time. Please wish them well. Best regards, Stan----we followed up on this---and got this e-mail: Dear Mayor Bubba, Good morning, my name is Rob Towery and I recently purchased a restaurant located at 16 E. Liberty St. and I was wondering if you would be able to help me with the history of the building or point me in the direction of places to start looking for information. Thank you very much, Rob Towery---the location at 16 E. Liberty has quite a history in 1958 the Rainbow moved from Main Street but was sold as a Chinese Restaurant that closed a year or two ago.and another part of this story across the street: Applications have been made to demolish and remove from the property #19-21-23- and 25 E. Liberty current occupants are the Liberty Street Cab Company.and (now closed) Logans Caf (I remember it as Charlie Logans fish sandwiches etc.and Muldrows East side Barber Shop---Muldrows was at #25. #25 in the early 1900s was the location and home of Delgar Hose Company #3..good history heremy generation of folks will remember the very colorful character Clarence (Junior) Player who was at #25 that was the Army-Navy Storeas a historianI have no objection to these buildings being demolished and removed

Breaking real estate news this week the southeast shore of Second Mill is being further developed here is some news on this: Bubba, the name of our new project is TheCove @ Second Mill. We acquired this property from the Brown family. There will be aprox. 155 lots with 24 being located on Second Mill. The roads are roughed in now and we will be bidding infrastructure next week. This is a beautiful tract of land, and by implementing a low impact environmental design it will insure its beauty for generations to come. We hope to be able to get building permits by the first of Feb. Thanks, Frank(Edwards)
