The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday Sept. 16, 2006 Weather nice
Dear Everyone:

Well, we have been a long time with our computer working just right, .but we could tell about 10 days ago that something was going on---we were not getting messages on Hamcpa.com nor could we transmit. I am beginning to write this on Friday
morning and it is now up and running.        When we got through to our server there were 1891 unread messages.  We have spent some time and have eliminated about . It will take another hour or so to read and digest those that remain. The ones we have deleted are mostly ads from the Canadian Pharmacist and for some reason we get a lot of mail about investing in stocks and some other junk. A number of you have sent us some answers to questions and as always we get some inquiries about Sumter's history. There are over 850 that we have not gotten to as yet. If a message from you is in this mix.we will answer as soon as we can get to it. In the meantime we will not be able to put a lot of stuff in this letter today. Maybe next week. We are grateful for our contacts and support. And as it gets harder for us to get out and around, we consider our computer a real joy as we can use it sitting down! Of course we are sorry that we lost communication, and if it is something you wanted tended to right away please understand and send us your message again.

It was a mystery to me as to why some of you did not send replies, but you did and we just did not get them. One real important message was from granddaughter in NY who had a birthday. Grandmamma (Miss Barbara) was worried she had sent a check to wrong address. And like everything else we all seem to worry about---she got it ok as the old saying goes, we all worry too much about things that do not happen!

The Sumter Fire Department will have a new addition to its list of Sub-Stations sometime in December. We are looking to open a sub-station (construction under way) on the Thomas Sumter Highway (new 521) to better protect our citizens of Sumter and Sumter County. This station will help us in our quest for our ISO rating coming very soon. This station will ensure a quicker response to that section of the City as well as the County, not only fire responses, but 1st responder,  as well as heavy rescue. Would like to thank the citizens of Sumter for their support in this project along with our City Manager and City Council. Asst. Chief Doug Mathis (Bubba note the first Sub-Station is the Lynam Station on Alice Drive just down from Aldersgate Church. It was in the early 1970s---this and other stations added since then plus some other things gives Sumter the lowest fire rates in S. C.)

In a message dated 9/9/2006 5:47:50 A.M. Central Standard Time, mayorbubba@ftc-i.net writes: some of you might remember her husband Jimmy Harper. Jimmy inherited a couple of old cars from his uncle. Think one was a White and cannot remember the other. Pretty sure it was a Pierce Arrow, Mayor Bubba. I don't remember seeing it but heard about it when I was a kid. Dad's Packard is still in the restoration shop....best guess now is that we will get it back next spring. Should be worth the wait, but it's a looong wait! Gordon Logan

Sumter now has a tattoo artist. Saw in the newspaper where a shop had been opened on Bultman.it is on that part of Bultman that is north of Broad, turn right just beyond the gasoline outlet that was in front of Wal-Mart Kroger location. It is opposite where you used to enter Bultman coming out of the parking lot from Wal-Mart.  Kroger(used to have a beauty shop here..//and believe there was a repair shop for Volkswagen.

Hi Bubba- Some of the EHS class of '65 decided to celebrate the arrival of their big 60 with a cruise out of Charleston to Bermuda in November of 2007 (when the majority will turn 60). The committee(self appointed no less-Gloria Danner Seidl, Ingrid Evans Simmons, Peachie Ray Manville and VIcki Northcutt) has been working on getting the word out to all the class members (over 300!) since well before Memorial Day. The response has been fantastic ; so we quickly opened it up to include family and friends. As of Labor Day over 60 have signed on. My plea--if there are any members of the class that have not been personally notified would they please contact Peachie at  armtour@cox.net  or call Ingrid in Sumter(Mrs. Ray Simmons)-we are missing at least 50 people-some in Sumter. Entire thing started with your kind assistance in running a 'blip' in your newsletter. Any assistance is greatly appreciated in spreading the word. The point is not the cruise but being sure all the class has the word. Many,  many thanks with any help your readers can give. Love, Peachie

Carole Black has sent us an e-mail about her husband Fingal. Dear Folks, Thanks for all prayers for Fingal. He is very ill in hospital. We pray that the Drs. can continue to find ways to make him comfortable and heal him if it is God's will. Hope all is well with each of you. Your friend, Carole.  Fingal and Carole were the owners and operators of the Dairy Crme on Broad Street for a good many years. They sold it about 2 years back. Good folks.
Promoted to glory was old time Sumterite Johnny Pringles. Brothers were Potsy (Pott) (Alva Jasper) Pringle, Gus and Jimmy. Johnny's father was in business with his brother Jim Pringle. They operated the Rainbow Caf on Main and then around on Liberty.  Johnny was the man in the kitchen and after the restaurant closed he worked for Billy Lane at Pizza lane until he retired. His wife was Annie Jo Plexico who was in our class of 45. She died last year. Johnny used to be a regular at the court house Barber shop, was a delightful fellow

LaNelle Penney. Charles Penney's Older sister was promoted to Glory---spent most of her adult life in Texas. Husband was career man in the U. S. Army. LaNelle was in the class of 38 or 39 and when she finished Sumter High---the boys and girls had separate schools. Her parents came here with the Brooklyn Cooperage Company that went out of business (barrel manufacturing) when Santee Cooper lakes came into being. Most of the raw material for the manufacture of the barrels came from the Rimini area.

We have had a call that Humbert Kingsley (Class of 42) has been promoted to glory out in California. We did not get any details. He had a sister named Carole that was a year or two younger.so she may have been in class of 43 or 44. We did not know Mr. Kingsley and hope someone will fill us in on this former Sumterrite!

Many will remember Joe Floyd, formerly with fire department and other jobs with city---he was promoted to Glory this week.Three children---served in Navy---was a real good giver in devoting his time as an example for others. He will be missed!

Some things---Nothing new on Golden Corral. .Have not seen anyone on Korn Industries (Sumter Cabinet) Development board in the process of finding a new guy.   There is a persistent rumor about a big box store south of town, but that seems to be all --just a rumor.  For you all at other places, one issue in this area(Sumter-Columbia) seems to be gangs. The schools seem to be well aware of this and appear to be on top of this so far, but reports from Police Departments it seems to be big concern. Football, Footballand more football on TV on the college level. One Carolina fan shared with me that USC will play four games in 19 days. The TV money seems to drive all of this and it will get worse before it gets better. With me it is a little to much, but I do not seem to have any favorite programs just now. Miss Barbara likes Law and Order---but other than the news programs in the morning I do not watch a whole lot. Was crazy about the Braves games, but this year is a struggle for them and I miss some of my favorite players that have retired or been traded---Hospital expansion well out over old Canal St, almost covers this old street. Montgomery Ward---Thompson---work continuing every day. Atrium on top changing our skyline.

Mayor Bubba,
It seems that yet again we will miss the opening date set for Monday, September 18th. I hesitate to set another specific date because of all of the missed ones in the past but it looks like we should get open by the end of the month,  provided we don't have any other hidden surprises pop up. I look forward to seeing you soon. Katherine Katherine's Restaurant ----

Dear Bubba, I am over at NBSC. I enjoy these newsletters very much. I thought you might be interested in a recent reply I got after inquiring through Senator Jim Demint's office on the question of a new Sumter main Post Office building. A letter came back from a Ms. Linda Macasa, Government Relations Representative, USPS, dated August 15th. She indicated they (USPS) have had a nationwide facilities prioritization process since fiscal 2003. Quoting from the letter, "...we cannot institute a plan for a new facility at this time. "At this time, there are no plans to replace the Sumter Post Office." I think you touched on this topic in last week's newsletter, and thought this would be of interest to you, Grier, and your other readers. Regards,

John Romance news for you all that were at Edmunds in the 50s---I am back in the South again, living at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. I signed up a few years ago when you were having trouble with aol email delivery, so we lost contact and I would like to receive the Purdy St News again. If there is still a problem with aol,you can use ladyblubell@yahoo.com, or a local service provider I have which is TedLide@bricklanding.net. My news is that I have just remarried. Her name is Athalia Averitt, and we were sweethearts at Edmunds High back @ 1952 and have just found each other again after 52 years. Her father was pastor of Southside Baptist Church in `52,  Shepard S Averitt.  And as you probably remember I was living on corner of Purdy and Frank Clarke. Looking forward to hearing from you. We have had a nice message from Ginger Jones. She gives us an update on John.  He returns to Hopkins this next week for a checkup and scans.  He is nearing 100% in recovery. Looks good, has energy---doing well in stamina. Playing golf. Hair is back. Ginger always sends us a message as to how God is so good and thanks each of you for your prayers and support. It has been 6 months since treatments began. Please keep the Jones family in your prayers.

God loves you and yours. Love him back. trust him. Sometimes his messages seem to not come through, like with computers, but they do. He guides each of us.

Love from 208
