Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday Sept. 9, 2006 A little cooler
Dear Everyone:
Well, it's about time we have some computer problems and they are here. It may take a week or two if this gets transmitted---I am not sick, but imagine, I will feel bad by the time we go through the frustration of making some changes. It is probably time for some up grades on our equipment---I have had a computer and have been sending out this letter since 1998..and have been through doing over my address book etc.-. AOL really put us through some changes a couple of times that were painful. Anyway, please have some patience with us.
Another bit of housekeeping.we will start back with this issue with our US Mail subscribers. We took the summer off and just printed the ones that we took to Sunday School, so they have not missed any issues. Some of our readers managed to get this newsletter from family members or friends. If you can get the mail that way let us know as each mailed (US Post OFFICE) letter cost 55 cents. Think the mailing cost (considering printing, envelope stamps etc ) is about $30.00 a week. We are well supported in this and again we do not sell subscriptions as that would involve keeping books etc. and again, thank you all for your most generous support and love you return to us here at 208. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF WE CAN TAKE YOU OFF THE US MAIL LIST!!!!
Very sick at this time is old friend Fingal Black. He has not been in the best of health of a good while and lately has been house bound. His wife writes, requesting your prayers: Dear Folks, Thanks for all prayers for Fingal. He is very ill in hospital. We pray that the Drs. can continue to find ways to make him comfortable and heal him if it is God's will. Hope all is well with each of you. Your friend, Carole
Two promotions to glory were in the Friday edition of THE ITEM---one was Harold Chandler, known to everyone as Rock---grew up at Stateburg where his father ran a store and was magistrate(think the store was on the corner of Kings Highway and the Columbia highway---or the right)later Rock and Jake ran a store (served hamburgers ?) on the left---in this corner today are fruit, vegetables, and other sellers from parked trucks. Sister is Mrs. Fred Ortman (Lib). Rock was 88. Two children that many of you know. He was at Garden City for a number of years. The other promotion was Norma Boatright (Harper)seems to me she should have been in class of 47-48 or right around that time. Her brother Gary was in class of 43-44. They lived on Crescent Ave Some of you might remember her husband Jimmy Harper. Jimmy inherited a couple of old cars from his uncle. Think one was a White and cannot remember the other. He had a reputation as fast driver and have heard from some of you all about this when you all were at Edmunds High. Norma was a pretty girl as I remember!
We got less e-mails this week than we have almost ever had, Usually have some cutting and pasting and it makes this letter easy. However, with the start of schools and the restarting of many clubs and organizations, events will come later. The school early starts are changing the business world at Myrtle Beach and other places on the coast
And it is changing things here. Football seems to start in our very hottest humid insect month of August, How some of the players can stand the two-a-days practices is hard to imagine. Some schools still have football camps.
Locally---home building seems to continue with new homes coming up like cotton used to grow in some of the fields between the city and Shaw.(Shaw is in the City)---new ones are started and then in the blink of an eye, It is full of new houses. One is going up over on Mason Road. As you go out Broad Street turn right just beyond Cardinal Tire. And then the amount of construction will blow you mind and lots and lots of construction on the Wise Drive Patriots Parkway to Shaw. Went to Shaw the other day and believe the best way from Purdy Street now for me is to go over on Liberty proceed toward Wedgefield, then turn on Loring Mill Road (441-now) ---travel until it ends at Broad. When you turn on Broad, traffic speed limits are 60+ and it is dual land if you take the new road to Shaw it is slow and passing is tough.
Almost everyone is avoiding traveling on Alice Drive from Wal-mart to Alice Drive School and making a left turn going north or south two cars get through per light change some folks out that way are wondering when something might take place for some relief---it is my opinion. and just minethat it will be a long time and for Sumter County to get the funding and tough leadership for improvements is going to take a while---some want it---some do notbest way is to avoid this street if you can.
By the way, Main Street on the south end needs resurfacing in the worst kind of way plans are in the work for some things to happen at the old Western Auto building..and our delegation got some funds in the Columbia this past session and since you are thinking about that, end of Main the old Telephone Building improvements as a transportation center is being advertised for bids. Nothing has happened in long time!
I cannot confirm with the City as Ray Reich is out of town, but understand a couple of buildings on the north side of E. Liberty will soon be coming down. For you old timers one of the buildings used to be the Army-Navy Store (Junior Player)Charlie Logans (Logans Cafe) and Muldrows East Side Barber shop moving from there to the Pierson Building on Main will be the Liberty Street Taxi Company---(Pierson building is first on left on S. Main Street at this time just south of the Rotary Park)
Work really progressing on old Maxwell-Bros. (Julians-Montgomery Ward) building. This one is going to be a wonderful addition to main by Thompson Industrial for its home office. Again the Bubba News would like to thank businessman Gregg Thompson for taking the job as chairman of Development Board. Contractors are used to getting it done and his firm has a reputation of doing it right and on time. Hope some of our leaders will let him lead almost everyone seems to think that it may be time for some changes. No news on new developer as yet but feel confident it will work out Sumter at one time was dominated by Merchants depending on Agriculture, then lumber, then furniture manufacturing and now it seems our history is changing again from a furniture manufacturing center to some other things. Right now, it mostly seems dependent on the Military
Did ride around some as I just did not seem to have any news. The new Logans restaurant next to I-Hop on Broad is going to be huge. Nothing yet on Golden Corral but did notice that my old friend Mike Nelson has left I-Hop and see him in the kitchen at Buster's. Always enjoyed his breakfast and he fixes super Omelets---When he first came to Sumter he opened a business on Manning Avenue---called Omelets and more and then went with I-Hop when they opened. Over that side---Seasons still good as is Guignard Diner. Bakers Sweets seems to be a favorite with some of the young Mamas and lunch is good at Heavenly Ham. Rascals is a fun place and there are some others.
Just got my copy of SUMTER LIVING MAGAZINE, is a fine magazine. Good pictures. editor and publisher Kevin Ireland says he is getting calls everyday from advertisers. You will enjoy this---free copies are all over town. Good features this week are on area high school football. Pictures of coaches, stadiums---etc. Kevin is doing broadcast of Sumter High Games. Old timer John Quakenbush is doing Wilson Hall along with Clarke Newsom. Kevin and John did the broadcast of all the P-15 games from Florida and then from the world series. Don't know when I have enjoyed radio more than this.
There is going to be so much football on TV. It will wear out a lot of interest for me. Am not sure I can make any of the college games this year. Hard to get in and out of the grandstands. THE ITEM will come with an addition on this years baseball in Sumter. Will be a keeper for your collection if you are crazy like me and collect lots of stuff---
Old friend Mike Richardson who was with Winn-Dixie all his life is now at Piggly-Wiggly on Calhoun. He tried some other things---but back in his field. Safe Federal addition on Wesmark is tremendous. New addition at the Opera house in old Rogers Grocery next to Sumter theater is nearly complete beautiful. Standard Music Store (Jimmy Sanders) was there. Other folks on this spot were Bert Jones, Tailor, the Legrand Optical folks (eyeglass sign)Holland Office supply and maybe a couple of others. Katherine's restaurant (she ran uptown Deli) is still to open on September 18th.
I did not think I had enough for two pages and content-wise this is not much---mostly cause we could not send you all what we got from others. What we do get and send each week is a portion of the Love God blesses us with. Here is big gulp. Love from 208..taste best when shared with others..again.
Love from 208
