Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday September 2, 2006still hotrain

Dear Everyone:

I am trying once again to get some of this done on Friday. Football game tonight at Wilson Hall and we will go as grandson is on the varsity squad. So, you know where we will be and as it does not get over until after my bedtime, I have a hard time getting up early enough to write this on Saturday morning, but do try to update with anything that is late breaking news. Almost all of you will know that USC played Mississippi State on Thursday night and came away with the victory. Traveling out to Texas A&M will be The Citadel---and former Wilson Hall quarterback Derrick Moore may travel there. He is in his second year and may get some playing time this year. Checked with his Mom and she says he is doing ok with his academics. Shawn Grant who finished Sumter High finished in June. His mom says that he has gone to Europe to try and play football over there. He was an outstanding linebacker during his days as a cadet. If anyone has reports on Sumter Players in college---please send them along.

Almost every week it is with a heavy heart that I report to you all those that have been promoted to Glory. The first one this week is the promotion of Eleanor Moses, daughter of Richard (Doc- former Mayor) and Tat Moses. Mother is Tat Moses who has always been a nurse at Tuomey, one or two residential care units---Eleanor (48) is the younger sister of Dr. Henry Moses and Nurse Mary Moses Deakin. Also,  growing up in this loving home was Perry Weinberg (he now lives in Greenville)---Eleanor was an active participant in the Nazarene Church on Guignard and then Cavalry on Nazarene Church road. Her special friend was Don McLeod whom she knew from church activities. The Moses family lives at 110 Conyers St. Memorials are requested to be sent to Solomons , Calvary Nazarene Church or a charity of your choice. I have tears in my eyes writing this as I think how much the Christians at Calvary loved Eleanor. They could give lessons in how Christians are supposed to set an example in living and loving one another.

Also promoted to Glory is old friend Gwen Kolb Strange. Her husband was Francis whom she nursed during his long stay at a nursing home. Always liked Francis, he was an outstanding soldier and was 1st Sgt in the Army before he was 20 during WW2. .He served again as a Capt. in Korea. Gwen used to get this letter and take and read it to him and get me to visit on occasion.  Gwen was such a loving sweet lady that I know she will be badly missed by Family and friends.

There was a story in THE ITEM about Lilfred's at Rembert reporting the reopening on Sept. 2. That is the day we send this to you all. Tt will have the same kitchen staff. Parking will be changed for the better ---the restaurant will be open for Sunday Brunch telephone number is 803-432-7063----(888-432-7063).hours are 6-11 Tuesday thru Sat. Sunday 11 to 2CEO will be Clyde Grant worked at Lilfreds a long time. A lot of the menu will be the same + some additions.. If you want to know how to make the cold slaw let me know and I will hunt the recipe!  Katherine Prow has experienced another delay on her restaurant (next to Opera house) it should  be on the 18th of September rather than the 12th.  She was the successful operator of the Uptown Deli on Main St. .New announced seafood restaurant is to open after building new and remodeled location on Liberty Street. It will be behind the Rotary Park.(where the clock is)..in the olden times, Liberty
Street had a number of restaurants that catered to blacks. One I remember was Charlie Logan's Cafe.  Served fish sandwiches. Checked around and no one seems to know if it is still in operation and what the hours might be..

The Branch Post Office on Bultman has ceased operation as of August 28this was in University Center next to the Photos Unlimited establishment. Box holders at the Post Office are asked to call at the main Post Office on Main Street to get their mail. We have no further information as to the opening of another PO in this area.and really I do not know who to contact for information. Postmasters seem to change often and I do seem to be able to keep up.if anyone can get to authorities ask them for some local input about a new location---and service---patrons always complained about the hours of operation and lack of stamps other than that, people liked this post office. Maybe Grier Blackwelder and some of the Chamber committees would like to address this as it is certainly convenient for a lot of business and residential. This story was in THE ITEM and I called Grier think he was to see if he could make contact with the Postal folks

Mayor Bubba,  Josephine Wilder was one of my favorite teachers in High School. She had such a dry sense of humor. I remember that she had a list of "class rules" that she would read to us at the beginning of every year and I always got such a kick out of them. My favorite was, "don't complain about the temperature of the room unless you intend to do something about it." Of course, we had no control over the room temperature, so her tongue in cheek way of saying don't complain about it always made me laugh. I wonder if anybody else who took French from her remembers any of the other "cute rules" she had.... Dolly Heath Kent (Bubba note Dolly lives near Lake Murray hear from her every once in a while. Thanks Dolly for a nice tribute to this great teacher.)

Carl Dubose brought in news clipping yesterday that was from THE STATE newspaper picture of the Sumter High bandmarching in parade in 1951 for inauguration of Gov. Jimmy Byrnes

The new Chairman of Fed. Reserve is from Dillon they are honoring him. Laurens Floyd was raised there and was in school with Ben Bernanke says he was good musician==played on football team..was real smart and went to Princeton and other schools. Bernankes father ran a drug store in Dillon others here from Dillon are Lucinda Bostick and Glenn AyersI roomed one time with Frank David from Dillon. If he had the Federal Reserve job our government would quit spending money

Breaking story on Friday was about the new Development Board CEO--Scott Fredrick resigned yesterday ---he had been hired on July 13th and was gone before 2 months were up.  Jim Kepner has been filling in for nearly two years but will leave by January. In the two months on the job, reports on Fredrick were glowing about he and others going to the European Air Show to solicit business meeting and developing prospects. As in everything in life things seem to work for the best sometimes---and things happen we just don't understand. ---so let's hope for the best. Gregg Thompson is new Development Board Chairhe is a outstanding businessman. Runs a
tremendous based Sumter Company and is doing over the old Maxwell Brothers building downtown if he can get our leaders to give up some territorial rights----he will be the greatest builder ever in Sumter sometimes easy solution seem to be blocked by deciding who will pay what and support what and nobody wants to give up their own positions and sometimes the race question seems to raise its head all of this is politics I hope Gregg teaming with Jack Osteen can get some of our folks together. Think we have some great folks in Bill Noonan and Deron McCormick.  Let's get going,  our thanks to Jack and Gregg.

On Thursday,  we went to the Air Force Association-Chamber meeting at Sunset.    Well attended and good program by speaker General Michael Mosely, commanding General of the Air Force was commander at Shaw a few years back he congratulated our leaders on setting the Gold Standard for community relationships got to see some old friends and met a few new ones.

Article that I have submitted this week for Saturdays THE ITEM is some quick stories about football here in Sumter try  www.theitem.com  then on Sunday we have a picture of Robert Sanders who was bandmaster at Lincoln High.

Good luck to all the high schools here in Sumter---Crestwood, Lakewood, Sumter High---Wilson Hall, Thomas Sumter---we will go to Wilson Hall as grandson is on the Team but part of our heartstrings will be at Lawrence Manning. They are playing Hammond and we have a granddaughter that is cheer leader for Hammond. Guess when Wilson Hall plays Hammond over there we will have to sit on one side for a half and then move to the other side for second half. I will be watching Miss Barbara---God gives Mama's a big special dose of love, as they will give it all away on grandchildrenaint anything like it in this world to compare. Watch one to see love in action!  Make your Mama's love grow. Give it away like they do! God Loves you, he just does.
Love from 208
