(SEEMS TO ME THE TEAM IN THE 50's HAD A THEME SONG---Bonapartes Retreat
is what I remember---help us on this !!! And can you buy this record??? ---try this web site on your computer--- Mr. McElveen, just wanted to let you know that the web address provided for P-15's in your newsletter does not work as written. I believe it should read www.p-15.com/ thanks, (Marion Henry Davis, jr., m.d.) ---and if you like you can pull up www.theitem.com. THE ITEM has a reporter and photographer in Iowa---excellent coverage for all of us---thanks to all of the Osteens.
Just had to get all this in---State Newspaper has not given us much coverage nor has the TV stations in Columbia. (we are in the Midlands) but this is good national coverage for Sumter. Thanks to all the coaches, players and parents. THANK YOU. We will have some bragging rights for a long time---and we all love to brag on Sumter and it's people.
Do not have a lot to report on the sick, but missed reporting to you that John Samotis (Ret. USAF) was promoted to Glory a couple of weeks back. His wife was Sumterite Peggy Burke McIntosh---she was fashion dept. manager at The Capitol and then ran a store at Palmetto Plaza called Town & Country and another one??. She had two girls, Angela married and lives in Columbia area and then younger of the two, Jean. She worked for Campbell Soup and now Carolina Golden.
Bubba, We are in distribution with a new Higher Ground Magazine. The first issue, which will not be distributed in THE ITEM is being targeted specifically to areas we have designated most likely to produce results for the Kingdom of God. There is no advertising at all other than acknowledgment of sponsors and contributors. The content is very full and colorful. We are excited about the expanded areas we are reaching in parts of SC as well as several other states. The new issue can be seen online at www.hgmag.com if you are interested. Al Newman
Good morning Bubba McElveen!! The two lots were cleared next to Tony's Pizza,
because Tony's Pizza is expanding it's current building and not just adding more seats but also adding some parking spaces.Wayne and Lisa The Copy Shop
Bubba, Marian McKnight was Miss America, not Miss USA. I will never forget being in the Lake City Tobacco Festival Contest when she came as Miss America. We had our pictures made with her in a tobacco field with us standing in what was called tobacco drags. She sometimes visits in Manning. BUBBA NOTE: If at all possiblego to this show. Saw it with original cast in 1945 and several productions since then. Wonderful would be and understatement and the talent here would be as good as it comes..see you there!!!!
Some things, rumor has it, that a number of prospects are looking at the Whitaker property where Hampton Apartments used to be on Washington & Hampton..Another rumor is that we may get a big store on the S. Side but no NO confirmation---the new Steve & Barrys at old Wal-Mart location is good looking inside and doing business. They have put down a wooden floor impressive---local shops are reporting doing good business with retired community from Clarendon County. Thanks Clarendon for doing a great job on this---We will see another doctor next week with our back trouble
Some of our flags were worn out as they were up nearly 30 days at Riley Park. We are now ready if they want them for the homecoming of the P-15's. National Guard unit from here will be called up Sunday. Eden's Peanuts are ready. Know you all much be ready for some good old SALTY BALL PEANUTS---- were 5 cents a bag in olden times. Most prepared by Mrs. Ham on Sumter Street---(Eden's are in the greater Dalzell area)
Need some help. Am trying to do some stories on Music in Sumter. Send me something on the Frank Girard Municipal Band and his days of teaching. Also, something on Mr. Cliff Moise. How about Mr. Jordan that taught at Edmunds. Anyone know of the whereabouts of Mr. James Pritchard (he went on to have one of the best bands ever at Carolina..)how about some things on Mr. Simmons (Simmonds?)have written one article and trying get material on others. Have located a picture of the Lincoln High bandmaster and how about Uncle Pete Kiker and the Smokey Mountain Hill Billies..good memories of the good days.. By the way, was Guy Lombardo here at the Shrine Club?
The Honorable Ramon Schwartz will be honored on the 21st at 9AM when a portion of Highway 76/378 will be dedicated in his honor. It sure is deserved by this humble servant of the people of Sumter. What a great citizen he has been in all respects. (please do not tell this as it has not been announced!)-----
Sumter won the first game ever in the American Legion world Series 7-5 at Cedar Rapids Iowa (8-18-2006)---will play second game tomorrow..Wonderful---Wonderful Amazing!
Enjoyed my visit with each of you. Remember all good gifts come from God. You were one of those, and what has been great for Miss Barbara and myself, is that God more than blessed us with children and grandchildren. Yours are the same. Just think of them for a second and then say a prayer of THANKS.
Love from 208
