Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208. Saturday, August 12, 2006 Hot-Stormy
Dear Everyone
The weather and threatened attacks seem to be all of the news on TV. So, know you all are up to date on that. The only concern here in Sumter seems to be how it might affect our men from Shaw, and then someone always has somebody somewhere in the world or traveling by air. We now have a granddaughter working in NY. So grandmother likes to know what the weather is doing up there. Big news here in Sumter is about baseball. Our fourteen year olds are National Champions. Played out in Texas. Grandfather, Horace Curtis sends us this: Stafford and Curtis lead the World Champion Dixie Boys (14 yr olds) to victory - in Grand Prairie, TX. These guys were undefeated - winning 17 games in a row. A pretty good accomplishment.

Full coverage can also be obtained by clicking on www.theitem.com or by reading THE ITEM. What I have been following is the American Legion P-15s and they also have a web site. They are in Deland Florida playing in the regional. Won the first game on Thursday night. It was broadcast by John Quackenbush and Kevin Ireland Z-95. Another game on Friday night at 7 or maybe 7:30.. Many comments on what a great job John Quakenbush has done for us all over the years over radio ---what an asset he has been for Sumter Sports fans---guess he will do Wilson Hall football again this year. It starts about the 1st of September. Too hot I think. The schools have opened and you will once again have to get used to school bus traffic.
Sorry to report that Gwyn Shelor died this week (paper said she was 75).she was selected as Miss Dixie at Daytona in 1950 and was on the cover of the VFW national magazine in March of 51 as Miss VFW. She was also selected as a beauty queen at USC and was Miss Garnet and Black. Gwyn married Bill Duffee (Shaw) and they moved to Florence, as they had business interest there. 5 children. 2 deceased. 2 boys in Florence and daughter in Washington State. Some of you were classmates of her sisters Alice and Betsy and will remember them well. **we have a copy of the VFW Mag.
Also sorry to report that a couple of days later Lucy Moore Aspinall was promoted to Glory. She would have been in the class of 39 at Sumter High. During WW2, she worked at Shaw and met her husband Lt. Peter Aspinall, who was an instructor pilot at Shaw and for awhile Shaw trained some of the Brits. They settled in England after WW2 and would visit some over the years. She had three children. 2 boys in England and a daughter that lives in Spain. Her sister is Mrs. Alice (Jimmy) Harrelson that lives in the family home on the corner of Calhoun and Church. You can write Alice (Mrs. James D. Harrelson, 121 Calhoun Street, Sumter 29150). To help some of you with your memory. Lucy and Alice's mother was Aline Harby Moore. Sister Alice Shelor lived next door to the east in red brick two story house that became the Henry and Jesse Shelor home during your time. Lucy was buried in England. Gwyn was buried in a private cemetery out on the Pinewood road that is the resting place of her parents.
And while on beauty Queens, Miss USA was Marion McKnight from Manning in 57 and Shawn Weatherly was Miss Universe in 1980. Both of these girls have families and live in California. So, you can tell your children about all of this.
Rick Roddey has returned home from Tuomey.
Some news about old YMCA friends:
Remember Jack and Sara Harvie? They were visiting the beach this past week and gave me a call. We spent part of Sunday with the two of them and they are both doing rather well. Jack retired from the YMCA in 1991...retired 15 years, and Sara still sings...as well as ever. They had so many fond memories of Sumter and the many friends there. Jack is 79 and Sara 75. Both look great...especially Sara. The children and grandchildren were sharing sun and sand at Myrtle...Bootsie and family. This info came from Rand Baily.
Mr. Mayor, Thank you for requesting info on the Wilson Hall expansion. I'm always eager to share our news when asked. As you may know, we've been under construction for almost one year with this latest project. We leveled the old "Corinne and Julian Schwartz Memorial Library" (with permission,, of course) to make room for this project. The total new and renovated space is just shy of 20,000square feet. New space includes two middle school classrooms, a ceramics studio, three new oversized art rooms for elementary, middle, and high school students, a drama room, an elementary school library, three new offices, and an art display area. Renovated space includes splitting the old library in half and creating a central hallway to the new addition. The two new halves contain a new high school Media Center and a new multi-purpose room which has been set up for drama presentations, i.e. stage, lighting, seating for approximately ninety visitors. Outside, on the school grounds, we've closed the "playground gate" which always seemed to block the Wise Drive/entrance fifty yards up Wilson Hall Road which will hopefully clear the intersection by bringing the traffic onto our campus. In this project, we also created an additional forty parking spaces. Because we believe our parents will now use the new "East Building Entrance", we've dressed the doorway for aesthetics. Along with the parking we've created lots of new outdoor seating for our students for after school convenience. We'll have new bicycle parking between the lower school building and the new addition. There will also be a new walk-through/ride-through gate off of Wilson Hall Road for pedestrians and bicyclists. We built several new covered internal walkways to keep everyone dry, too. Finally, we're presently working on our internal landscaping and should finish this week. We'll begin the external areas, around our buildings, once all of the paving has been completed. I look forward to giving you a personal tour at your convenience. Let me know and thank you for your interest and support. Best, Fred Moulton
Bubba, I wanted to let your readers know in advance that the 2007 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce annual retreat will be held at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head Island January 26-28. In addition to the great speakers and programs, Hank and Anne Galloway Martin will be performing alongside their band at the Saturday night dinner and banquet. The performance at the Retreat will most certainly get the audience involved and even get some of those folks on stage throughout the evening. Call the Chamber at 775-1231 if you need more information or want to sign up. Jack Osteen----Chair-elect--Sumter Chamber of Commerce (Bubba note as you know Hank and sister Ann were at Billy Lanes Pizza Lane. Overflowing crowd. We did not make it, but glowing reports of great entertainment and a good time are circulating all over town! Some said that it was best ever. Hank and Ann's mother also was a performer, She was favorite for many. Real sorry we could not go)
Then, this note from friend Tommie James: Dear friends, The State paper in Columbia erroneously reported in Friday's Metro section that Second Nature will play at Finlay Park tomorrow (Sat. Aug. 12). The correct date is Friday Aug. 18. Musically, "TJ" (Tommie James) Second Nature,
Apartments, condos going up on S. Pike(By Pass) on the corner of S. Pike and the road next to the NBSC records center.seems to be good many. Very much like the ones on the other side of the road. The two little houses that were made into offices on E. Calhoun just beyond the corner of Main.(next door is Tony's Pizza---was Georgio's) have been removed from the property. It is vacant lot now---do not know what might go there. This at one time was offices for O. Lang Hogan, Bill Stevenson, Wade Kolb, F. E. Gibson, and many others. I went by to see what progress was being made on the old Uptown Deli that is moving into the old planning location on Main Street north of the Opera house. Uptown Deli was a good restaurant on main in the old Maxwell-Bros-Blackwell furniture Co(Mont. Ward's Julian's, Hughes etc) and this building has been sold to Thompson Industrial---much work has been done so far with more to come offices of Thompson will be located there. Katherine Prow was operating the Uptown Deli. So. she made a deal with the city to move the restaurant into the old planning location. She was in hopes to be open in May. And it is not opened yet. Saw her this week and she says that Sept. 12 will be the opening date and asked me to be there will broadcast on radio and tell the history of the building it is Sumter's oldest as Bultman Shoe Company opened there in 1882. She will have a drawing of the building on the menu. Again, Katherines (new name) will open on Sept. 12. An excellent place to eat. You will like it..
