Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday, August 5, 2006 Whew!!!!

Dear Everyone:

No one greets you now with Hello--- it sho is hot!, and I will not take up any space as that is the #1 topic all over the U. S., and everyone follows all of this on TV. Here at home, things continue to be on the quiet side, and traffic does not seem to be as heavy on our main roads. Think everyone is staying cool at home. Thank God that we have air conditioning to keep us all cool. Sort of feel sorry for some folks that have paid big rents at the beachbut most places there now have excellent heating and cooling. Along these lines Chic-fila has a bargain on milk shakes along with a sandwich---it is real good and refreshing. Some one asked me about local tea and I told them, that I thought the tea growing plantation was back in business in Charleston.  Also, if anyone in the Manning area could bring me up to date on the tea farm that was being developed at Wilson. Please send me some information.

I am delighted to report that there are no promotions to glory this week. Also recovering is Phil Booth---he spent 33 days at Tuomey. Rick Roddey is in less pain
and any relief would be great for her. Julian Moore is resting and hoping that his pain will soon lessen.  I went to my back doctor this week. Wants me to see a specialist We continue to have some difficulty walking but do good some days, and not so good on others. I am very grateful to my maker for letting me get around pretty good. Most all of the time, I am looking to sit down. Was on a program for District 17 schools. Stood right there 62 years ago for a diploma. This time, I asked for a chair and sat down. The program was the gathering of teachers for the new school year. Believe all public and private schools will open within the next two weeks. Football is beginning It is too hot for that, but that is how everything is now, scheduled. One thing I can remember is the heat of walking tours at The Citadel in summer of 46 after that---I did it their way and the way I was told
still a pretty good policy.

Hi, Bubba - Read your newsletter with great interest - particularly the part about the Coastal Conservation League. My grandson, Hamilton Davis, is now working for Coastal Conservation in Charleston and absolutely loves it. Hamilton is T.'s son. I'm proud of him - as I am all of my grandchildren. And she adds==Bubba - I have a 95 year-old aunt who lives in Laurens at Martha Franks Retirement Center (Baptist). She was a nurse for many years before retirement and was at Tuomey for quite some years. She has pictures of all the hospitals she worked in, except Tuomey. Do you have a picture of Tuomey Hospital as it was back in the 1940s???  If so, I would like to borrow it to have one made for her. Always enjoy the newsletter. Thanks for a tremendously well done job! Best regards, Betty Davis (Mrs. T.H. Davis, Jr).---Called Betty. Pictures of Tuomey are in my book and a little history to go along with this. Betty wrote this in response to our announcing the project by Betty Caulkins and others about a new room honoring nurses at Tuomey.

The Tuomey foundation will have a gathering in September. My friend Murphy Tuomey will come and bring her husband for him I need to get in touch with some hog and other hunters as he would like to visit here in Januaryplease help me with contacting some of the hog hunters. thank you !

Montgomery Ward (Maxwell Bros. & Blackwell) building has an addition being constructed as we write. It will be an enclosed fire escape steps and an additional elevator---also some steel being added up top ---maybe a new roof? Tuomey has big crane for adding its new additionhas a red and white checkered flag as it is near the heliport---Library is shaping up enough so you can sort of tell how it will look is going to be a grand and much needed addition for Sumter

Bubba, Thank you so much for including me in your mailings! It is so nice to keep up with our former fellow Sumterites. Just a note, our daughter, Tara,(in Callie's class)was married July 1st at The Citadel to a sweet Charlestonian, Scott Nimocks. Our son, Jason,(one year behind Reese's class)married a sweet Augusta girl, Leigh Wilson, at the Citadel in 2004. Jason just finished taking the bar this week and he and Leigh are moving to Walterboro to serve as Judge Butlers law clerk for the next year. Frank and I are surviving the heat and will be glad for the cooler days of fall. Best Regards, Jo Ann Ward.

Shaw began June 27, 1941.  When we were at the Mabry Park, that is just as you arrive at Shaw AFB going west on US. 76. There is a monument honoring Sumters war dead. Behind this is a fairly new facility that is a skate board park, looks good and seems to have a lot of activity. This skate board park replaced the one that used to be at the tennis courts at Palmetto Park just off Wise Drive. What I seemed to miss, was what happened to the Model Airplane Airport and flying field. I had forgotten that it moved it is now over on a facility that is leased to the model airplane hobby people by Glasscock Trucking for $1.00 a year. It is on Eagle Road. Eagle Road is across from Shaw you turn at a business that changes name along and along it was Tricky Woos then changed to Rolex and Rolex made them change this name so it became RX. The model airplane club is very active.  Kaydon---Bearingsexpansion to make bearings for windmills that produce electricity from the wind(Kaydon has been in Sumter about 30 years employs about 240). Primarily makes a bearing for military use on tanks that is what the top turret turns on military use of the bearings are about 10 feet. On the windmills they will be 14 feet. 35 new jobs. The Whitaker trust has all their rentals---rented ---Good afternoon Bubba, The renovation of the Lincoln High School  now know as the (Trinity Lincoln Center) for our Boys and Girls' Club new location is progressing in a very timely manner and we will be open in September after Labor Day. Trinity United Methodist Church is to be commended for make the Center available to the B and G's Club. This is definitely a good move for our community and everyone will benefit from it. Trinity United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Council, local citizens have raised $293,470.00 in cash and pledges. This is outstanding and this is great investment in lives of everyone involved in the clubs' activities. We need an additional $100,000.00 dollars to complete the project and install additional equipment, because more people in our community will be using the facility. We invited interested individuals to visit the Center and see the project in action. If anyone wants to make a donation make their check payable to the Trinity Lincoln Center for The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club relocation project. Our mailing address is The Trinity Lincoln Center, The Salvation Army Boys and Girls' Club, PO Box 2229, Sumter,SC. 29151.

Be assured of my sincere appreciation to all our donors. God bless you. Newton Brown ,
