Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday July 22. 2006

Hot is understatement!

Dear Everyone.

Yes,  it is that time of year in your old home town,  that is hot a _‑‑‑‑‑every day the middle of the day is hot but it gets hotter and hotter like always and peaks about 5 or 5:30at 5:50 yesterday afternoon the sign at Sumter Mall read 100 .understand that a few days ago it read 107. Predictions for the weekend are some rain and from looking at some of the crops---we could use a pretty good soaking rain. Due to the hot weather, I have not been looking around that much to see what is going on some days it seems to me that everyone must be staying home as there is not a lot of traffic Broad and Alice Drive are the exceptions. Gas is now $2.75 and the price is going up every day. How blessed we are to live in an air conditioned home and have a car that has air conditioning. When I was in government and took part in ribbon cuttings on new industries used to say a silent prayer for Mr. Carrier who invented Air Conditioning.

In the newspaper this morning was an obituary for Henry Ray. He worked for O. V. Player a very personable and real nice man. He used to share some things with me about his family and the people in the Stateburg-Shaw area.one of his relatives I think an uncles old the first tract of land to the City and County for the development of Shaw in the 1940s (we have this news clip)Henry always added to this story that the sale was based on the family taking possession and moving the home.this was depression years and they did move the home and part of it still exist. Always wanted to get a picture of the house or the part that still exists. Henry, his smile and good attitude will be missed by us.

Glad to report that Phil Booth left the hospital this past Monday. 224 Haynsworth 20150---we have his e-mail and will send upon request.also Rick Roddey has been moved over to Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She is still in a lot of pain they are taking her off of some medicine so that she can take some pain killers she really needs a lot of prayer

Mr. McElveen, Do you have any information on Dr. Marvin Lamar Parler, his wife Josie Platt, and Lucy Platt? Dr. Parler was my g-great uncle. Thank you for anything that you can do for me.Guerry Felder felderw@camden.net Sent Mr. Felder some leads but if you have anything---we know he would appreciate hearing from you---

Dear Classmates and Sumter friends: You may or may not be interested in the fires burning in Southern California, but your prayers are sought to ask that the Lord spare our communities from burning again. In Oct-Nov. 2003, we had a huge fire that burned within 800 feet of our home and we lost 350 homes near my neighborhood around Lake Arrowhead. Now a fire of over 70,000 acres (per TV last night) is raging in 110 degree heat with humidity of 5% and it is only 6 miles from Big Bear City. Big Bear is only 28 miles by roadway from my house, and probably about 18 miles as the crow flies and believe me they are flying fast. This fire is larger than all of San Francisco now and growing by the hour. While not approved for use on wildfires yet, the DC-10 experimental tanker is supposed to show up by Monday to drop 12,000 gallons of water/retardant. It would sure help if some of ya'll called on your congressmen and senators to suggest they help California get this aircraft here sooner. Thank you for your prayers and concerns. I appreciate each of you very much, David Canine (David grew up here finished Edmunds..has been successful in California and is a regular correspondent)

Archie Parnell who finished in Edmunds in 1968) went to The Citadel and then to Carolina and its law school then worked for the Justice Dept.  Then married to Sarah so

Archie and Sarah will be at 403 W. Calhoun (old Eugene and Marion Moses home Eugene 111 was my best friend growing up).house was sold to excellent neighbors the Tommy Players-- we miss them).Archie has been in Hong Kong for a number of years and we have kept up with him and looking forward to when they finally move in down on the corner.

Also around the corner, the old George Levy house is looking better everyday this is in the middle of the block between Purdy and McQueen.

This past Monday we were invited by the seniors group at Grace Baptist to join them for a trip to McBee S. C. to get some peaches we made a tour event out of this stopped in Bishopville to view the mountain that is being built there from trash shipped there from up north could not find out how high it is as it grows everyday.is to the right just this side of I-20.then about 2 blocks away we turned off and went to see the topiary bushes that have been cultured and cut by Pearl Fry are a sight to behold he does wonderful work in his nice yard and garden next door. Fry was was working in his garden and stepped on the bus to tell us about his work. Says he he should soon be on TV again.his work is also on islands that are on Main Street Bishopville just makes you appreciate his talent and makes a wonderful impression of Bishopville.we continued on over to Hartsville visited the Museum there they have a 1899 Locomobile steam car designed by the Stanley Brothers (Stanley was first car to come to Sumter in 1901). The Locomobile was bought by the Cokers. It was the first car in South Carolina did not use gasoline. Used kerosene)other things there of interest.and then we took a windshield look at Coker College Only 14 miles then to McLeod's country store, museum and restaurant.if you eat there and order a hamburger you can not eat it all along with the French fries. A very filling meal. Peaches were for sale and they have been excellent eating at 208. We came back by Bethune and Bishopville almost no traffic from Sumter on the entire trip we were back at 3 after leaving at 9a good outing for anyone you might want to go

*********Listen up all you folks in Charleston--- I have a couple favors to ask of you. First of all, do you know anyone who works at the alumni office at the Citadel? I am applying for the Asst. Alumni Director there and I didn't know if there was anyone in that office you knew to send an email about me. Also, do you think you can include information about my future roommate and I in one of your weekly emails? I know a lot of people read that email, and I thought it could help in us finding a job. You could write that I am a

communication studies graduate with a minor in advertising. And Jessica (future roommate) is a Language and International Trade graduate with a minor in Spanish. Also, if anyone knows of any apartments or houses for rent that would be great. Thanks so much for all of your help!! Love you. Tricia Note---it does not get any better than this.  Tricia is my grandchild so you know I had to run this or do anything else I can for all of them! (do not know a whole lot of people at The Citadel anymore---)

New place for eating. Tidbits and Bites Sandwich and Gift Shop 1180 Old West Liberty.(just across Second Mill.  Across road from Sumter National)Phone # 773-9230. We have not tried this one as yet. Went by to see new Saloon Owner on Main. He is getting building ready.was hoping it would be named Palace Saloon that opened over the old Rex Theater in 1884. Sold spirits and Seegars(correct spelling then)the new business will be in the old Metropole Candy Kitchen.triple cone of lemon crème would taste good right now

Here is some Y news: Houston Texas...four or five years ago. The CEO and the CVO...that is Chief Volunteer Officer of the Houston YMCA went in to see Larry Kellner, CEO of Cont. Air Lines. He met them and was gracious. They said that they were there looking for volunteers for a leading non profit organization. Larry became very up front with the two gentleman, and stated that the only organization that he would ever give his time to would be the YMCA. As a lad, his experiences at the Y taught him so many of the values of life and he owed the YMCA more than he could ever repay. He had worked for some little short guy back in the 70's that have given him great work ethics, and he valued those teachings.....Not to prolong the story, Larry served on the Board of the Greater Houston YMCA for several years, and finally became the President of the Board, or CVO, and during this time he raised several million dollars...I think SIX...

Cannot end this without saying that God Loves you and your she seems to especially LOVE Miss Barbara and all of us ---Love from 208
