Love 208

The Purdy Street News Love from 208, Saturday July 15, 2006 Hot Hot

Dear Everyone:

We are in the hot-hot summertime. Temp is about 90 almost every day. Gnats seem to be out if you are outside. Miserable, but they are worse in August and early September

There are a lot of vegetables over at the Farmers Market next to the Exhibition center and there are many who are shopping there. There does not seem to be much business at the market on Manning Avenue. May take a year or two more for this one to get going. We used to enjoy street vendors that came by your home. But this day has passed. But many of you all will remember.   Older people will remember in the 30's,  the Dutchman named Mr. Lybrand that was on the Manning Highway just as you get to Dingles Mill. He had a wagon and great big Belgium Horse (looked like the Budweiser Horses). He was well known all over Sumter. I can also remember that our postman was a black man that rode a bicycle. His name was Tooley Bracy. He would bring us chewing gum sometimes. Tried a year or two back to get his picture but did not.  Share with us some of your memories---

Report on Promotions to Glory this week. First one is 98 year old Sara Blanding. Her husband Raymond was Clerk of Court before OV Player. (both served 32 years). His office used to marry people as the Judge of Probate, Miss Minna chose not to do this. Sara was younger than my Mother but her older sister was Miss Mamie (Mrs. Barnes Boyle mother of Barnes, Lad, and Louise (Deaton). Was one of Mama's best friends from Coker College. Sara had one daughter Emily (Graham) who has lived in Raleigh N. C. for years--- she looked after her Mom. Saw a lot of the family that we knew that were here for the funeral----

For my classmates of 1945 sad to report that we have lost another. B. Gene Berry. His nephew is J. R. Berry on TV news. The Berry Family and many other fine people moved here from Popular Bluff Mo. in 1927..all came with Brooklyn-Cooperage. This is why we have a Brooklyn Street in Sumter. Gene worked for McElveen Pontiac, Booth Motor Co. and was for a good many years with Suburban Propane Gas. Think he finished Draughns Business school in Columbia. Was a good man.

Believe I missed telling you all that Norwood Schwartz Allesandro was promoted to Glory. Children were Squeaky, Dolly, Martin Leslie and Tee Dee.(think I got it right). Her cousin,  Ramon participated in the funeral. Talked about Doodle Bugs that they used to see under their grandmother's house on Liberty across from the Y. This has led to conversation about Doodle Bugs and one of our friends wants to know if you find some, let us know as she wants to show them to her grandchildren. Also, how about catching a June Bug, tie him on a thread or string so she can show this.

And promoted to Glory was Cile Moise. Her big funeral was Thursday at 1st Presbyterian. She was a member of our Sunday School class and we will really miss her as will all her friends and kinfolk. Cile was from Abbeville, as was my mother (both talked a lot).  She came to Sumter in 1941 and guess the best way to say it is that she hit the ground running. Was involved in everything. Wrote for the Item..worked in School system at Crosswell, gave hundreds if not thousands of hours with the Red Cross and Tuomey Hospital. She made everyone feel good to be around her. Best thing is that her four children are doing the same thing. Husband Nick and Cile were participants at the Y
up until their-- very end. What a great lady of Sumter, and how blessed we were that this became her home. Have almost all the Moise Family on my e-mail, so if you want to contact any of them let me know and we will pass it along---

Now for sick report-- I've lived here in Melboune, FL since 1956. My reason for writing today is I thought you might not know my sister, Josephine Williams Wilder, had a stroke over a week ago and is still in the hospital there. When I was at the 1943 class reunion this spring she was the only one of our teachers there. Thanks for keeping us all in touch. Best wishes, Bobby Williams Bechtel (Please keep Josephine in your prayers..she taught Miss Barbara and me in high school and many of you all---Late report, she is home and son said if she can work in the yard she loves---she will get well quickly----Hey Bubba, Just thought I would let you know that my father William A. "Bill" Weatherly is not doing very well. Had a possible stroke last Thursday morning was in ICU for several days then moved to his own room. Has taken a turn for the worst and has been put on a respirator. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. ---and sorry to report that Rick Roddey had a fall at home and of all things she really suffered a serious back injury. Has had back problems for a good many years, is in a lot of pain. Keep her in your prayers for some relief, thank you!..

Here is a couple of good reports. Robert Moise was here for the Moise Funeral, looks better than he has in years, gained some weight. It was wonderful to see him and his children that came.  And this excellent report on Phil Booth (room 433 Tuomey).
He is recovering well. He is a fitness buff. Reports are that he is out of bed and walked over a mile in the hospital the other day. Hopes to go home next Monday.

Patti Hall, a longtime employee with Big Jim's is back in Sumter after moving to her home in Ashdown, Arkansas.  After Big Jim retired and sold his restaurant to Bubba Rabon..I traveled out there to Ashdown, which is on the Texas, Louisiana corner of Arkansas and visited there with Patti and her husband Tom..also saw a football game of South Carolina and Arkansas (South Carolina won) nice visit and I enjoy traveling..Patti didn't like it there, even if that was her home town with family and all, and moved back a few months ago...on Legette Street behind Jones Pontiac..She and her husband are currently retired and fixing up the house and yard etc..Regards, Big Jim

The Crape Myrtles all over town are beautiful again this year, Especially on Calhoun Street as always. Drive down Calhoun from Guignard to Washington, enjoy. Across from Grace Baptist, next door to Charles McCreight's office (corner of Calhoun and Church) is a blue Myrtle. Believe it is the only one I can remember. Some are various reds, but this one is blue. Gorgeous!  Mistake, it is purple, had on my dark glasses:

Called Betsy Humphries and she told me this. Bubba, Either spelling, crape myrtle or crepe myrtle, is acceptable. The Bible of horticulture, Hortus Third, uses the crape spelling, but Clemson Extension Agent and crape myrtle authority, Brian Smith, in his book, Some Like It Hot, uses the crepe spelling as do Clemson publications and their website. Some say that the crepe spelling refers to the krinkly flowers of crape myrtles (Remember crepe paper?). If you want to be absolutely correct, use the botanical spelling for the crape/crepe myrtle genus, Lagerstroemia. Crape myrtle flowers occur in white and shades of pink, lavender, purple and red. [An added characteristic of crape myrtles is the exfoliating or peeling bark of certain species. This adds to the beauty of the trees during all seasons. If a crape myrtle doesnt bloom, it is probably because it doesnt get enough sunlight. Crape murder or severe pruning isnt the answer.] Betsy Thanks Betsy and thanks for your columns in THE ITEM---

P-15 baseball back on winning track. Beat Orangeburg 3 straight. Now move further along playing Hilton Head. There next Monday. Will play here Tuesday. Went to dedication of the garden at Sterling House last night ---beautiful job so that residents and visitors can enjoy what a good job, something should be blooming all year around.

(Missed Sumter@six-- but understand it was successful. People now go at 5 to get good seats, too hot for me!
Chambers guide to Sumter reports the city is now 26.6 square miles, population 39, 790 (County 105957)males 48%, females 52%--Whites 49.6Blacks 46.3%--Hispanic 2.4%--and others including American Indian 0.2%they say that 78% of our people have a high school or higher education 49% are now married. Nearest city with population over 200,000 is Charlotte, it is 88 miles to Myrtle Beach and 83 miles to Charleston. Greenville is not shown. How far is it to Clemson?.Then this is from my memory, we are 7th largest as a city in S. C. and 15th largest as a county????We have 16032 houses with 90% occupied. Things have been quiet here. Schools are just 30 days away. Wilson Hall will be a week later than public schools. They will start on 17th August. Saw many old friends at the Moise funeral---real sorry to say, that sometimes we all do not seem to see and visit with each other except on these sad occasions

All for now, but think about what a great lady Cile was. She always brought happiness to all around her. You can do it also. Smile and keep thanksgiving and sharing your love for others on the front burner. You will get a lot of smiles and happiness in return..guess what? ---Sometimes-it helps better than aspirin, Tylenol, or Aleve. Ask you doctor with a smile, he will smile back!----

Love from 208
