Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday July 8, 2006 year gone
Dear Everyone:
Regular summertime in Sumter.I do not feel the humidity as I am not outside except for baseball games. We came in second, behind Florence but will be in some playoff games, and then the state tournament. The state tournament will be here at Riley Park. Again your hometown city officials are to be thanked for keeping up Riley Park. Riley Park was named for congressman John Riley he coached Post 15 teams from the beginning in 1929 until he was elected to congress in 1945. Buford Mabry played on the team in 29 and is still one of the biggest fans in Sumter. The baseball park was built and opened in 1939. All of the coaches have not only taught baseball, but character as well you will find that in all the programs in Sumter from knee pants through church league play. Makes Sumter a good place to raise a family is the same way
Penny Scheele (Mrs. Larry M.) was promoted to glory July July l, she was a grad of the College of Charleston was a CPA her office was in same building with her husband---on the corner of Broad and Crescent two children Betsy of Columbia and Paul living at Myrtle Beach. Penny and I were buddies as we picked up the mail at the same time at the post office she walked at almost a run that was her trademark that was all I knew of her except she had a wonderful smile and I would get one of those almost daily it would make my day and I will always remember her when I am at the Post Office I had made up my mind to give up my PO Box.but just could not do it, it is part of my life to see everyone get some smiles and hugs and it is a good place for me to stay in touch with the black community they know me from the newspaper and sometimes I get some good history from the black community seems my whole life now is the Post Office, my church, Wilson Hall and my coffee club but what a good run I have had all these years and for you people that think you cannot do anything for others.give them a big smile like Penny---it will do you good and it makes others feel good.
Also promoted to glory was a fine, fine, lady, Laura Hutchens, a member of 1st Presbyterian you would have thought she had the door key as you never saw anyone so good about attendance and participation. She not only served the local church but took part in International Missions and was Moderator (chairman or President) in the Women of the Church she even served the transitional team when the Northern and Southern Presbyterians merged after well over a hundred years we had split during The War. Some of you all grew up with her children Robert (Sumter), Thomas---North Dakota---Mary (California) their spouses six grandchildren with a great grandchild due in September. She was predeceased by another daughter Laura Ann.
Sick report we will start with this message from Phil Moise, Sunday July 1 about Cile: Mother seems close to death, but we don't really know since we've never gone through anything like this. She's confined to bed and sleeps most of the day. When she's awake she's talking less (down to just a few words) and understanding less, although we can still see she's thinking about stuff - she just can't get it out. For the first time this morning she seemed to have a far-away vacant look that was unlike anything we've seen so far. It's been about a week since she ate anything, and she seems to have stopped drinking. Thanks to everyone who sent cards and letters. She's no longer able to understand them, so just keep us in your thoughts and prayers instead. Tillie Cuttino has been fighting pneumonia.finally got it under control and was back at coffee club this morning was out for 2-3 weeks. Reports on John Jones continue to be good and they are most grateful to God and appreciate your support Phil Booth has been in hospital now for over 20 days we covered this last week he is responding and looks better each time we go to see him long way to go to recovery but is now easy to visit as he feels so much better While there yesterday, I went by to see May Sharp had a spell at the beach came back here and will go home today after two nights at Tuomey.she seems to be ok. For class of 45 and other friends Bill Weatherly has been hospitalized has suffered for a year or two keep him in your prayers.
Polly Harriett has moved to her new home at National Health Care she has such a wonderful personality that everyone, residents, staff etc will be glad she has decided to be there. She was class of 41 -----Bubba, thanks so much for the mention in your newsletter of my recent honor - very, very humbling but deeply appreciated. One correction, it was for having been in the ministry for 50 years, not at that one church for fifty years. Please remember me to Gene Moses when you go to the game together. Thanks again. Bobby Morrow '47---Sorry I misprinted this from Baptist Newspaper brought to us by Minnie Rogers---Clay Smith sent us thi s On Bobby Morrow. Bobby was pastor at First Baptist Cowpens, First Baptist Gaffney, and Boulevard Baptist in Anderson. He served as president of the SC Baptist Convention in 1984. He is back at Midway in Gaffney as interim pastor for the third time I believe. He also served as a trustee at Furman. He recommended me to Alice Drive 12 years ago .I'm sure you remember his brother Ralph, who wrote such insightful letters to the editor.---Thanks for all you do and for finding Alice for us! Grace Clay Smith Pastor, Alice Drive Baptist Church (the Alice he mentions is Alice Harby Shelor present day Alice Drive is named for this beautiful lady died from TB)----The City is advertising an election in the newspaper for council seats ward 1, 3, and 5. This is a non-partisan election---filing will open July 17 and close August 15. You have to live in the ward. Now serving from Ward 1 is Bubba Lowery(this seat was held by Willie Singleton)Bubba has served one term from this Ward that is in Morris College area. Ward three is basically in South Sumter since 1985 this seat has been held by Mrs. Hattie Scarborough (Funeral Home). Ward 5 is in the western section of the city and is held by Bob Galiano(Russell & Jeffcoat)---if he offers it will be his third or fourth term he ran as a Republican the first time. Miss Hattie was elected as one the first blacks when elections were changed from at large to districts(also elected at that time was Rev. Randolph still serving from Ward 2, and Bill Painter Ward 6 was first elected in 1980 (?). This has been a good council, but in my opinion we need some new council member's especially in the black community the baton needs to be passed to some younger people who will have some new ideas. School board election are coming up also hope our citizens are paying attention and will get out and vote!
Bruz Crowson has retired from THE ITEM bet you have a picture of you that he took! Important---DM sent us this JUST A REMINDER....within the next few days, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will begin receiving sales-solicitation calls. If you're on your cell phone, you know they'll cost you minutes. It will only take a minute, and blocks your number for five (5) years. For home phones as well as cells you'll find it simpler to handle it on the web as you can block all of your phone numbers at the same time.Go to: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx
