Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday July 1, 2006 Hot Sultry

Dear Everyone,

July 4th is next Tuesday so be sure and be safe. Big plans here at Dillon Park for a day full of activities---and many clubs are having cookouts. Miss Barbara and I will have a quiet 4th at 208. We will put up thirty to thirty five flags at Riley Baseball park as it is not only a celebration of our nations birthday, but they will honor all that have served in our armed forces at the game. Col. Hyatt from Shaw will honor us by throwing out the first pitch. By the way, don't forget about the brick project pull up web site wwwP-15.com for additional information and a list of former players you might want to honor a friend.

Old friend Eugene Moses and I have been to almost every game this year, and will more than likely go to the state tournament that will be played at Riley Park.

The fourth of July celebration at Dillon Park will be sponsored by the Sumter County Recreation Department and the 20th Squadron from Shaw you might want to attend.

Promotions to Glory this week include Mrs. J. P. Broughtton. This one was in the paper on Friday morning.no details as yet.---then --- Sharyl Simpson Cowles, age 67, beloved wife of 22 years to retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John H. Cowles, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at her residence. Mrs. Cowles was born in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of the late Angus Simpson and Ethel Beasley. She was a secretary for the 20th fighter wing commander for 10 years. She retired after 35 years of service to the U.S. Air Force. She loved to travel and developed a great interest in railroads and crafts. She won two "Best in Show" awards for basket making. She was of the Mormon faith. Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Michael Rigney of Rock Hill, Mitchell Melrose and his wife, Sharon, of Burleson, Texas, and William Rackley of Carlisle, Pa.; one stepson, Michael Cowles and his wife, Catherine, of Duluth, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Nancy Cowles and her husband, Joe Costigan, of Oak Park, Ill.; one brother, LaMonte Simpson and his wife, Noreen, of Hooper, Utah; and 10 grandchildren.---- Mrs. D. M. Winkles has been promoted to Glory at age 91. They were a master farmer family and were leaders in the Oswego Area great church members (Bethel Methodist) and community folks in the Oswego Area she had finished girls high school when there was such a thing children are David Winkles Jr. Adville Weatherford, and Marilyn Hammall are here many grand children and great grand Sick list report--- From Phil Moise--On Wednesday we're moving Mother in with us. Her new address and telephone number will be: Cile Moise 948 Oakdale Road Atlanta, GA 30307 404-373-2333. We've had 24-hour care for the last couple of weeks, she's still getting weaker and more confused, and simply not getting much benefit from being at Arbor Terrace. We had hoped she'd be able to turn that into a real home, but she declined too quickly.---then Steve Barwick sent this report on Phil (room 433 Tuomey.  I) I went to see Phil Booth last night. Considering what he has been through, he seemed to be doing very good physically and mentally. He is in a lot of pain and of course cannot move around, but he is alert and talking. I could tell he enjoyed my visit. He will be in the hospital for a long time and has a lot of recovering to do. He is very lucky his problem did not flair until he got back to the US. He was in Budapest and several other Check. Countries the day before his attack. Late reports are good! Telephone # now a Tuomey 803-774-9000 ****note change to 774

Just some things--- The "Winthrop Magazine" summer edition came out yesterday and in it is a picture of Emily Boone Stroman'46, Emily Stroman Boykin''76 and Emily Elizabeth Boykin '07. All three went to Winthrop. I don't think there are many 3 generations that have gone there. THE STATE newspaper (June 21) published a story on census changes in S. C. Sorry to report that it shows Sumter( 39,679) with a minus 0.07% Newberry, Greenwood. Spartanburg, Gaffney also showed losses Summerville (37, 714) is fastest growing city in S. C. followed by North Myrtle Beach and with Myrtle Beach they have a population of over 40,000---Columbia is biggest city in SO. C. with 117.000---Charleston has 106, 000, N. Charleston has 86,000---Mount Pleasant has 57,000---and of that number there must be 5-10,000 who grew up in Sumter lots of folks in this area My personal opinion of the census in the last 40 years is that it is not a very accurate count with new housing here and other things it seems to me Sumter is larger than they publish it and traffic it seems everyone must drive on Friday afternoon. Sumter is still 7th largest city in S. C. I guess the biggest metro area near us is the Columbia Metro area that would include Lexington County towns nothing was said in the story about Florence but impression of a lot of people here in Sumter is that it is growing and growing in a lot of ways New roof is being put on old Sumter Frozen food as we write---Suburban Propane has moved from next door to the Post Office on N. Main to a location on S. Pike on the by-pass---a former executive of Suburban says that he has heard that the building has been bought and will be used as a Doctors office but have not confirmed this We tried Shirley's for lunch a lot of food..we tried the Fried Chicken Shirley was hard at work with grandchildren helping her. Some may not like the location just south of Lafayette on Manning Ave and it does not have much seating capacity but food quantity is plentiful and it was served hot like my meals to be hot you might want to give it a try cannot not find out where Patty might be she used to work for Big Jim---anyone know.thank you! Bill and Vera Boyle have relocated from Covenant place to the Clemson area.no address as yet but will send it along when we get it. Got a call from Emily Blanding Graham (Raleigh) N. C.---we talked about Mrs. Whittemore (this is correct spelling). Sad to report that Emily's mother Sara does not have a whole lot of time left. Will send Emily's e-mail but do not have it as yet. Carol Kirven writes I am retiring Administrative Assistant to Judge Howard King and today is my last day at work.
