Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday June 24, 2006---Hot & Muggy-Normal

Dear Everyone:

It is just normal summertime weather here in Sumter---hot muggy thunderstorms, etc.

Most of the annual meetings are over with and many organizations are not meeting over the summer church services are on the summer schedule at many of our houses of worship hard to get in touch with a lot of folks as they are on vacation local governments are meeting trying to put budgets together for next year City of Sumter will raise taxes, water and sewer rates to cover some raises and higher prices on fuels, etc.

Did not read in the news articles about any cuts but when I was there, as it is now you always say you are running on an extra tight budget. One thing is that funding by the Feds a year or two back did not include yearly appropriations to cover expenses just the building of some things like Hope Centers, swimming pool,     and we will add a new full time sub- fire stations one was the Lyman Station on Alice Drive added in the 1970's my memory says it cost 60 to 70 thousand but cost over 100 thousand yearly to man etc. Now I think the city operates 2 more---Stadium Rd---Manning Ave---Lynam

Lynam station was not named for aviator Billy Lynam---but was named for his father long time Chief Zeke Lynam

Sorry to report that Retired USAF retired Col. Bob Levy has been promoted to glory He and his wife Eileen (64 years) have been residents of Covenant place for the last few years sons are Brian, Geoffrey, and James and their wives and children He was with 9th AF but upon retirement took full advantage of things Sumter was and excellent participant for the betterment of things here, we were fortunate that they chose Sumter.

Phil Booth is in hospital is in intensive care diva-tic-u-litis or however you spell this??..Bubba: Doris has been moved to NHC Mauldin, Room 115B, 850 Butler Road Greenville,S.C. 29607. Her condition has grown worse and her daughter wanted her near so she could make sure she was getting the best care. Please keep her in your prayers.Ed Ervin Hello to you, Mayor Bubba. Just thought that you might like to pass along that Momma, Jeanette Stafford Parnell (Sheriff Byrd Parnell's widow),is now a resident of Covenant Place. She has been quite ill since December 2005 and we almost lost her twice, but God has been good to her and us and she is getting along quite nicely....she especially likes the food at her new home! But I bet they can't cook grits and quail like she used to do for Daddy's bird suppers. He will have been gone 17 years in October. Time has passed so quickly. We miss him a lot. Sending tons of love to you from 4120 Hwy 15 North! Jean Parnell Graham

Dear Bubba, Harvey Tiller will be greatly missed around this little community of Mayesville. I just wanted to pass along the fact that Mayesville High School's baseball team with Harvey (1943) was the STATE CHAMPIONS. As Always, Kell B.Compton

--- It was surely sad to see Harvey Tiller's name in the obituary list this week but I do appreciate your mention of him in "With Love" this morning, Bubba. It's a very minor thing but his brother's name was Wray, not Ray, as most people thought. Their (Harvey's and Wray's) mother was a Wray from the highly regarded Wray family in Burnsville, North Carolina. Billy, the other brother, and I were the same age and were classmates at PC. Those of us with Mayesville connections will never forget the annual fish stews Tiller Brothers Chevrolet used to put on. It seems they were held late in the Fall after the cotton was ginned and it was time to kick back and relax a little before the cycle started over again. Robert Bass was the head mechanic at Tiller Brothers and he would clean up the garage area so spotlessly you could almost have eaten off the floor in there!Long tables were set up on saw-horses in the shop area and all the men of the community were invited to the supper. It was a public relations gesture on behalf of the dealership, of course, but we never looked at it quite that cynically. Drayton Cooper---

Last week we had a request for any memories anyone had of a Mrs. Whitmore that lived on Harby Ave here are a couple of replies edited of course---Fran Siddall wrote:

Dear Bubba--regarding Mrs. Whitmore, my grandparents lived at 12 Harby

Avenue. Directly across the street lived a family named Neighbors. Mrs. Whitmore lived next to them, towards Hampton Avenue. A Blanding family lived just beyond Mrs. Whitmore. Mrs. Whitmore had at least 35 cats. But they were not a problem with the neighbors because the cats stayed in the house. When she died it was quite a job cleaning up the place. Incidentally, the Neighbors family had a large "Mother Goose" goose for many years. The bird came out with them on the porch or front yard of a

summer evening Never heard of it harming anyone. An interesting time of life. (Bubba note this was Ray and Sarah Blanding---he was clerk of court as long as OV Sarah is still living in Raleigh NC tried to contact daughter Emily..but do not know how help anyone???)--And---Bubba, I knew Miss Whitemore as she ate at my Mother's boarding house and she would take her leftovers home to feed her cats. She was very interested in antiques, she had a sign on her house on Harby Ave. and because she knew I played the piano she gave me old sheet music that had notes that looked like triangles. She wanted my brother Alfred Murrell to drive her around town, being a teenager he refused. She was an unusual person. Thank you, Bubba for keeping us up on the happenings in our town. Bless you, Ann Shaw (While talking about boarding houses---anyone remember Smiths on Bartlette---how about Mrs. Spencer on Calhoun ???)
