We have been going to the P-15 games need to report right away that the other night in a game against Camden, Sumter Catcher Richard Jones hit two homers over the right field fence at his first two times and bat and then another one his fourth time up..and also was credited with a double that he turned into a three bases with excellent base running never had seen three homers by one batter in a game he played for Wilson Hall and hope he will enter The Citadel this fall where he hit the homers was over the fence where some say was a picture of Bobby Richardson one even said that Ray Davenport had painted this one Ray cannot remember ever doing this and saw Bobby and Betsy Richardson and they say they do not think there was ever a picture of Robert there here are some other baseball recollections that we got this week
A little Google research and I rediscovered that Ron Grant, Jeff Blauser and David Justice also played for the Sumter Braves and were a large part of the Braves huge turn around in the early 1990s. Later players included Ryan Klesko, Vinny Castilla and Mark Wohlers. But not Chipper. Jared Shope---Dear Mayor "Bubba", I enjoyed reading about the baseball teams that have played at Riley Park. The "Sumter Flyers" were mentioned in the letter; they were the "single-A" team for the Montreal Expos. Rendell White from this team went on to play in the majors. Another player from this same "Sumter Flyers"to make it to major league spring training with the Marlins that won the world series that same year is my son-in-law; he damaged a nerve in his elbow which ended his career. His name is Joe Norris and is the pitching coach for Sumter High School. Best regards, Joe Bailey--- Mornin' Bubba,
I was at Riley Park on June 30, 1969 for bat day with the Sutton boys and their dad Muldrow. We were some of the fortunate few that got Mickey Mantle bats but we didn't get his autograph. Unfortunately we used the bats in neighborhood games and eventually broke them. I think I remember that Paul Dietzel was at the game too, though not sure why he was present? I also remember Roger Maris visiting Sumter one summer and sitting in the bleachers with Bobby watching a legion game. Not many people recognized him and he was able to sit and enjoy an evening watching a ball game. Woody Shuler
Hank Greenberg never played shortstop in his life. He played first base.---do not know who sent this but they are right another correction I need to make and an apology wrote in a letter that Ramon Schwartz was once the field goal kicker for Carolina (USC)he never was but in his heart he played every play at every position while in attendance at all the Carolina Games he could attend sorry Ramón but you have always been in every game played by your beloved Gamecock Ramón was very kind in correcting this said I would make a good fiction writer
Some things---a lady wants to know if anyone can remember a Mrs. Whitmore on Harby Ave that had a lot of Cats and Bubba, Will you please ask in your newsletter if anyone knows the status of Boris Bourdine, the wonderful Russian singer who spent a few years in Sumter? He was having trouble with getting a visa to stay in the country, and with all the controversy about immigrants now, I think many people will be interest in Boris.
Thanks!send this to me at mayorbubba@hamcpa.comI have nothing in my files.
Belton White---just finished his 1st year at USC has summer job with MOULTRIE NEWS (and also the James Island Paper) in Charleston. They sent him out on a story and it was on Martha Bostick Gunther---she was daughter of Frank and Lucinda Bostick. Swan Lake Martha has retired from teaching and has two grown sons
All for now Quiet week annual meeting of Sumter County Museum we need memberships please call me about this program tonight in downtown Sumter may go---but night air seems to be bad for old people except at baseball & football We all like our new preacher at 1st Pres. Sent to us by the main man blessing.
