Love 208

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday June 10, 2006

In the old days, all of us sat down just before the 10th of the month and paid our bills. With the coming of computers, all of this changed. In today's world bills are due at the pleasure of those that extend us credit. But a lot of other changes have also been made, this one just comes to mind whenever I hear it is the 10th. And then I think about how hard it was to get credit in the 30s. I must get 3-5 offers of credit cards each month. Another thing some of these companies must sell list to other companies as we get a lot of flyers etc. I bet I get 25 messages a day----many of them from drug stores in Canada.Wonder how they know I am an old man and that the main word in our house is Oh-ieLady just told me this week that her grandchildren call a senior member of her family Uncle Ohie

Promoted to Glory this week was Miss Ruth Weatherly who was known by most everyone she started to work for Mr. Kell Brunson in 61 and was part of the investors in Elmore-Hill-McCreight. Everyone loved her as she was so kind and gentle and always had a nice smile. I used to enjoy picking on her some and over the years and always enjoyed her kindness and love of people. She will be missed

Here is memory and e-mail that I want to share with Bubba Subscribers! My family was honored to be a part of a memorial service on Thursday, June lst for my father, Capt. Hugh C. McLaurin, Jr., given by a group of retired SCANG who served at McEntire. The group, who meets monthly at Ft. Jackson, has begun to focus on the planes flown out of McEntire and those who flew them. It was a touching moment for my brother- Hugh III, sister- Jeanie, and me, along with my mother- Jean Gasque. There was a PowerPoint presentation and a table set up with pictures and other memorabilia, including my father's flight helmet. You may remember that Daddy (known to most people as Tiger) had a close call off of Myrtle Beach back in the 50's and then later died during the Berlin Crisis in 1962 at Moron AFB near Seville, Spain. He had problems with his F104B while landing and was forced to eject. However, his parachute did not completely open, and he was killed on impact. Though a very sad time for our family, we all have been able to see God's hand in bringing good out of such a tragedy. My mother later married Everett Gasque from Elloree, and I have two precious sisters that I adore- Susan Gasque Batson and Laura Gasque Spiers. Sincerely, Kathryn McLaurin Weeks (Kathryn lives up N. Purdy toward Broad in the house where the Moseley's lived on the corner of Mason Croft real nice pretty lady just like her mother

Last week we asked about the sign at Riley Baseball park that had Bobby Richardson's picture on it.no replies---but have some folks that can sure remember this but I cannot. Here are some baseball stories that we did get back we really enjoyed these replies: Bubba, You raised the question as to whether Chipper Jones was with the Sumter Braves. He was not. He's too young to have been with that group. In fact, I believe Tom Glavine may be the only former Sumter Brave still playing major league ball, and he's no longer with the Braves--he left Atlanta to pitch for the Mets in 2003.Glavine is about 40 years old now. Speaking of the Sumter Braves, my mom used to live in the same apartment complex where quite of few of them stayed when they were residing in Sumter, and she got to know many of them rather well. As you know, quite a few of those guys went on to play for Atlanta in the majors and did exceptionally well. Mom was a huge Braves fan.She was pretty outgoing, witty and fun loving, so she would often chat with the young upcoming stars and would frequently make them cookies and they called her grandma. She later had a great time watching "her boys" on TV when they made it to the majors. Best wishes to you and Barbara for a good summer. Libby sends her love to you and Barbara too. Regards, Jeff (Jeff Aiken was our minister at 1st Presbyterian now in Allentown Penn.---his fine wonderful mother was named Jane)

Mayor Bubba: As always, thank you for your very interesting and informative newsletters. You mentioned Chipper Jones and the Sumter Braves, which at one time I believe were known as the Sumter Flyers. I do not remember Chipper Jones ever being here, but I remember well that Tom Glavine and Mark Lemke were both with the Braves. My daughter (when she was about 8) managed to get her hands on a foul ball that Mark Lemke hit into the open bleachers around 1st base, and she took it on the field for him to autograph after the game. I do not know whether she still has the ball.----Mayor Bubba, It is interesting that you mention the 1936 Hank Greenberg home run at Riley . I have never heard anyone talk about it but daddy. When I was a boy we used to talk baseball and of course, home runs were the thing with Roger Maris, Mickey and all the great Yankees. He said Greenberg's hr was one of those Ruthian clouts that were still going up as it cleared the center field wall. Must have been something else! Alwin Burns Go Tigers, ----And this on the Ball. Bubba, when I lived on Harby Ave my next-door neighbor was Yank Blanding. He was the person who ended up with the ball Hank Greenberg hit over the fence at Riley Park and he gave me that ball. I still have it, though I must admit with times being what they were and loving baseball as I did, I used that ball some when we did not another one to use The Game was at Riley Park between the Detroit Tigers and Brooklyn Dodgers Greenberg was shortstop for the Tigers the ball traveled over 400 feet big crowd there for game but it seems everyone in Sumter was a witness people still talking about how they were there---April 29, 1939)(another note Bobby Richardson got his friend Mickey Mantle to come for bat day, June 30, 1969---2000 bats were given out and Mantle signed Autographs for many---anyone still have your bat or autograph???) Bobby did all this as fund raiser for the Y..---he has been one of our Lords greatest gifts to Sumter, and a wonderful example of worship and praise.thanks Robert (growing up name) Mantle did not hit one out of the park have a few pictures of a the boys at the game)

Bubba: Community July 4th celebration will be the same as last year. Jammin July 4th. will again be held at Dillon Park and will be a joint effort of Shaw AFB, the City and the County. The event will feature live musical entertainment by Threshold, they are the group that we used for the Sumter/Shaw Street Fest downtown last year. There will be rides and games for the kids along with plenty of food. The highlight of the event will be fireworks at 9:30 p.m.. To help deal with the traffic, free shuttle bus transportation will be provided between Sumter Mall and Dillon Park. Busses will run non-stop and we encourage people to utilize the buses, thus eliminating long traffic waits. More details will *****From Judy Lewis PA at Shaw---(what a great lady) The base's 20th Services Squadron coordinates this along with the City and County. This is the second year the Jammin' July has been held at Dillon Park. Hope you can come out and enjoy the evening and fireworks.
