Love 208

This is it for today.  Enjoy====

The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday June 3, 2006 Muggy

Dear Everyone:

Let me begin by saying this should be a short note. I do not have that much this week, and have not been out much to see what is going one. And we do not have as many e-mail announcements but sometimes I feel that way and then cannot get it all on two pages. We usually prepare and US mail (and hand-outs at church) about 75 per week, but we have suspended this for the summer. May begin this in the fall once again, but really wanted the summer off. We will continue with our e-mail subscribers each week, and some of our e-mail customers are getting the mail via friends or relatives. Maybe some will be motivated to become computerized!

Dear Mr.. Bubba; Thought you should know that William F. Waters Jr., known to most as "Fred", passed away May 13th. He was 88 years old. My Uncle Fred worked at the Sumter Post Offices for as long as I can remember delivering the mail for so many Sumterite's. He served his country in the 41st Division of the U.S. Army during World War 2 and was so proud of his country. He lived on Mathis street where he and Aunt Clara raised their three children. Before that, they lived on Highway 521 next door to Dr. Linwood Bradford's parents home, where Dr. Bradford's sister Ann and her husband,Russel now live.He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, three children,a sister,a brother and four grandchildren and two great-grand children. He was a man that you would have been proud to have known, I know I was. Thank you, Uncle Fred's niece, Kathryn Burrows---Amen to thanking our maker for people like Fred Waters.

By the way, if Billy Hall or anyone can give us some details on the promotion of Tylene Dunlap---it would be appreciated several folks have asked about this thank you!

Bubba, Attended Ashton Phillips funeral in Charleston last Friday He was promoted to glory on May 23rd . Ashton grew up on the family farm in the Lynchburg area. He and I were in the same class at Clemson. He was a very successful businessman here in Charleston, very respected, and surrounded by many friends. He loved hunting and the outdoors. Bobby Richardson was one of his hunting buddies. He was very generous with his time, talent and monies to his church and other charities. On another note I attended our 1956 Edmunds High class reunion in Sumter last Friday night. We had a great time. I had to miss Saturday night. I would be glad to share a few names with you of classmates that came from out of town. Billy(Fort)Ashton was a real supporter of USC Sumter among other things.everyone loved him By the way.Billy---send us the names of your classmates thank you!

Message from Phil Moise.

Please spread the word and pass this along - Mother's new telephone number is 404-292-7235. She would love to hear from you, and she hopes to be making calls herself once we get her telephone list set up. She does not have an answering machine - we don't think she's quite ready for one yet. So if you call and she's not in, please try back later. However, she goes to bed early, so it would be best to call before 7:30 p.m.

Hello Bubba,

Just curious to know if you or any of the others who took some of the Rocky Ford cantaloupe seeds have planted them and are they coming up? I hope they are as sweet as what we get around here. Of course they are not ready for picking here. Sincerely, Harriette J Ullrich (The "J"is for Johns. Gave most of these seeds away, anyone plant them and sure hope you will bring me a melon or two--)

Was invited by Harvey Senter and the Rotary Club---some say it is Big Rotary (Monday Club) or someone says it is old Rotary they sure did not show any signs of age in entertaining those that played on the Shaw Football team in 55-56-57Bobby Burrows was one of those---he married Jean Lawson and they live in N. C.  He was an outstanding college player---he said that when he came to Shaw, the Colonel called him and told him he wanted him to play in a game the following Friday.  Bobby said he told the Col. that he was finished with playing football and then the commander said maybe you did not hear me. I want want you to play this week Bobby said Yes Sir,  suited up and played 60 minutes and then became officer in charge of the football program.  Our whole community could take lessons from Harvey on hospitality,  good job Harvey---just like you Marines are supposed to do!

This past Monday we took part in furnishing 28 flags for the Memorial Day at Mabry Memorial Park next to Shaw. Believe it drew the biggest crowd ever. Sammy Way made one of the best speeches ever and all that participated made it a grand program. ROTC units there along with Honor Guard from Shaw all participating veterans groups really made this a special program---they work hard---all pulling together, It is a pleasure to see how good they all take a special part---do what they are supposed to do. That kind of cooperation sure makes for a better Sumter.

Another hard working group is the baseball committee for the American Legion P-15's all work hard this years team is two deep at every position ---and pitching should be some of the best ever. Have been to one game and will be at another one tonight.  This is my chance to get out in the cool outdoors as I can no longer get out and play golf it is enjoyable. If you are home you might want to visit. Riley park has been painted,  grass is good---billboards all new. The state tournament will be the last of July it is excellent baseball and maybe the best facility in our state, by the way was Bobby Richardson's picture painted on the fence, and was it Hank Greenberg who knocked the ball over the center field fence when a couple of professional teams played an exhibition game here. And was Chipper Jones here with the Sumter Braves????

Alice Drive Baptist will be 50 years old this fall they asked if I could get a picture of Alice Sheller Harby. Camp Alice and Camp Alice road (now Alice Drive)are named for her I had a wonderful time getting a picture from Robert (Bob) Shelor. He is a lawyer in Spartanburg. Sister is Kit Shelor Coker at Mt. Pleasant.

If you are local, drive by the National Bank of S. C. on Washington and Warren. Grounds and trees are beautiful. Architect Charles McCreight should be proud of his work there and it has really added to Sumter's beauty.

Lots of rumors about restaurants and business locating in Sumter some of these are old rumors making the rounds once more, but have not heard anything that I felt would be reliable.  No report on the Iris Festival yet. Have been by and the rest rooms are open for business. I hope we never again in our history have to turn any visitors away, as I witnessed a couple of years ago. Now that we are getting new planning director,  will offer my flags for display for 4th of July but need to run this by the Friends of Swan Lake first. Do not know about the base fireworks this year but we do not do a lot here in the City. Hope I will hear from someone who can let us know??? Maybe Mayor Joe or a council member. They all get this,  but do not hear from them.

Sorry ---not much letter but will make up for content by sending each once of you another ton of Love from 208..(works best if you give it away)
