Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday November 4, 2006 Pretty Fall
Dear Everyone
Well---guess you all know that I did not have the operation this past Tuesday as I thought I would. Had it mixed up---but we did report to Carolinas Hospital in Florence. We pulled out of the driveway at 208 at 8:31. We were inside the hospital by 9:30 and spent the day---either we were getting tested (blood work Cat scan etc) it seems that everyone was running behind, and then our Doctor had an emergency) We got to see him about 3 in the afternoon---but much of this was waiting for test results. He had good news as some things were not as bad as we had expected so we will have 4 by-passes on next Wednesday Nov. 8, ---we will report at 6 AM after we got this scheduled, we reported to the day hospital and went through the process of pre-registration for next Wednesday, surgery will be that morning---spend the night in intensive care followed by 5-6 days in rehab..and then home and possibly rehab here at Tuomey that is out on Alice Drive & Wesmark then it should all be over and maybe I can start with something on our back. Some that have had this surgery say they feel better almost before getting out of hospital and some say they never had any pain at all. So. looking forward to getting all this behind us. We want to thank everyone for your wonderful support and prayers we feel like that we will be surrounded by prayer and will be in God's hands---what better hands could we be in? Thank all of you we have gotten some e-mails and cards from folks we have not heard from in a long time. Some are from Edmunds Grads that I did class reunions for a few years back and some are from real old friends who I only see or hear from every few years. I am very grateful to churches and prayer groups thank you and I shall use your love by sharing it with others.
Promoted to Glory this week was J. P. Brougfhton. Very active in the association of Prisoners of War had me out one time to be part of the state meeting at his house he was a successful businessman wonderful family man, and was famous for berry growing (like blackberries etc) he got so good at this that Clemson sent some folks to study how he did it (for you old timers---his Dad was game warden and in the deep deep swamp of the Wateree is Broughton's Mound.
I am not sure where this island do not want to go there but the hunters will tell me.
Also promoted to Glory was Dave Lietky---he came here with one of our industries and made this his home after retirement he last lived in Sumter at Covenant place, moving to the beach to be near a daughter that taught school in Georgetown County we played some golf from time to time nice pleasant fellow
The new Black funeral home on Broad has had no activity since Marvin Scarborough was promoted to glory, but understand there is some real interest developing even had a Black minister to ask me who to contact. Bubba Rabon was involved in this and talked to him this week seems there also may be a deal in the making on the Big Jims, Cathy. the Mr. Bs location. Lot of restaurant activity just now.and everyone in the development business has something on the plate think you will see another chicken place near Shaw, and development is taking place in the Wesmark and downtown area. Katrherines on Main is doing good and the Brick Street Coffee establishment on Caldwell and the Cut Rate on Main has their regulars, doing ok. Lots of excitement downtown with most. Understand the target date on the Thompson building has now been set as March 2007 shapes up a little more everyday---do not know all the plans yet but everyone says it will wonderful for offices and some more things. This building has had a lot of occupants since it closed during the depression years. Guess I need to be calling this Hampton @ Main
You can talk to almost any developer or real estate person in Sumter and they cannot hide the excitement they seem to feel a lot of it is based on Third Army being located at Shaw and some housing is being built for this market we have been through some bad times with our industries closing and nothing along these lines just now Wal-Mart second store is causing a lot of speculation as to what we can expect and restaurant slogans next to I-Hop is hiring help just now and one or two others are said to be closing deals almost daily.understand that the Faster-Care has added on and many doctors are adding additional services at their offices.and some things are always happening at our own Tuomey
Locating in the old Suburban Propane building just north of the Post Office on N. Main is a new doctors office it is the Women's Healthcare of Sumter---Dr. Ronnie W. Dennis OB-GYN and Karen K Brinson, PA-C, The building has been done over and sure looks nice Suburban is now on S. Pike===by pass.
TV ads for the politicians are about to wear all of us out and advertising seems to be more mud slinging than ever we have already voted as 65 and older can vote absentee My peer group of most older folks seem to think that the county council vote on new monies for Sumter County may be in trouble due to the water park.but others---and some of our good leaders think it will be great and should pass some good folks supporting this.but think the silent majority may not have been heard from we will know on Nov. 8th

(Sumter, SC) The University of South Carolina Sumter announced Monday, October 30, 2006 the return of intercollegiate athletics to the campus. In August, USC Sumter Dean C. Leslie Carpenter sought comments and suggestions from both internal and external audiences regarding sports on campus. After studying many successful intercollegiate athletics models for other two-year institutions such as USC Sumter, Dean Carpenter made the decision to pursue a sports program beginning in Fall 2007. Athletic programs flourished at the USC Sumter campus in the 1970s with successful programs ranging from baseball and basketball to golf and tennis. "We firmly believe that the return of competitive sports at USC Sumter will not only positively affect our enrollment, but will have many other benefits for the institution, our students and the community we serve," Dr. Carpenter said. For more information please contact Misty Hatfield, director of marketing and public relations, at 803-938-3728, hatfielm@uscsumter.edu or Bruce Blumberg, athletic director,at 803-938-3838, bruceb@uscsumter.edu.
Two things on Progress Energy they will be around changing your electric meter if you are on their service.this will enable the company to read your meter from the office and will eliminate the meter readers. They were by the museum this week ours at 208 was done this week bet they took less than five minutes---we will have to reset time on digital clocks but this time we will not have to set the one in the car another thing that is in the newspaper is that Progress Energy has a contractor trimming trees on West Hampton and trees in the historic district---but I am not going into that as we have protested several times in the past so I am not going to put myself through this again maybe it would help to have the meetings and protest ahead of time rather than after the cutting.think we have been over and over the tree ordinance. Progress Energy is a good company with good people.
We missed Halloween as we were at the hospital in Florence getting home after 7 but understand it was considered a real success everywhere did get one e-mail that said for downtown a merchant or two did not like it as the city closed off Main for the entire day---maybe another plan for next year. Think this will be an issue in the next week or so!
Dear Friends: The portrait of Colleen was unveiled last Thursday at The Opera House with almost 80 people in attendance. Love 208
The Purdy Street News-Love from 208, Saturday October 28, 2006 Rainy & Cold
Dear Everyone:
You know, I publish this each and every Saturday, and sometimes I try to do just like the newspapers and do some of it ahead of time. Over the fall, I have tried to have it complete by the time of Friday night football games. Our Grandson has been on the Wilson Hall team, and we have gone to most of the home games. We have had a good time doing this, and I have tried to have our greetings to each of you ready by the kickoff on Friday.some weeks, we have had a full letter done by lunchtime on Friday.and other times we have tried to finish out our mail right after the game. I can remember when I used to get up on Saturday morning at 5 and do the whole thing. Many times when I start, I feel as though I do not have anything to share about your old home town, other times I just cannot get in all in---changed the font last week as we had to much.and on the US mail.we had to tape the last line before we could print it on two sides.
I want to first of all this week to thank many of you for your messages of encouragement as we are about to undergo my by-pass surgery everyone has been positive, and I have heard from a lot of you all that tell us how much better we will feel. I am looking forward to this, and are in hopes in the not to far distant we can also get out back fixed. We hope to see Dr. Dorn Smith on Tuesday and hope we will have the surgery then or shortly thereafter do not know how long we will be out, but if we are still around or still out next Saturday, we will get out Love from 208 to each of you all If not, I know that you all will understand that I am not able or we are in rehab---hope to do some of that here as Tuomey has excellent reputation for this service.and of course I would rather be home. I think it will be real hard on Miss Barbara so please send her love and support. ----Well enough on this for nowagain, at this time I would say, do not look for our message next week! Will try to add an extra dose of Love for all of youit will stretch and last longer if you just add it to yours in giving it away!
As we mentioned last week, our Dad, Hoyt Shuler, was peacefully promoted to Glory on 10/14/06. Truly a gentleman, loved his family, church, friends, and Sumter...an honest businessman, Hoyt's Heating and A/C...devoted to his customers, business associates and employees. We celebrate his life and have peace knowing that he is with our Lord...waiting until we see him again. His daughter Dianne, sent this to usthanks
Promoted to Glory ---Mrs. Walter Dew Marjorie.she was such a nice lady worked at Avery Lumber Co. for years and years always made everyone feel better with her smile she and family lived north on 15 at a place they named the Ponderosa her husband was called Chinch---a very popular fellow ---he was in National Guard here that was called up before WW2 they were well trained and boarded a ship to invade North Africa our first battle(Sumter boys right there)they did not know where they were going until they got in the middle of the Atlantic by this time Chinch (Walter) was so seasick,,,,he told his Captain that if they would stop the boat, he would swim in and invade North Africa by himself!.this family had two nice boys see them from time to timed on Farley's mother was promoted to Glory no details at this time
Heard from one of Kirk Smiths son she says Stan is now a Capt. with the Lexington County Sheriffs dept. Incidentally Kirk was voted into the Hall of Fame as a football player he was in my hall of fame all the time!
Couple of my friends have been at Tuomey. Buddy (Clifford) Hodge is now out but old time friend Tommy Hughes is still there Tommy has been at Mariner East for maybe a couple of years.we hope he will recover ok (cards 823 Haynsworth Street) and Buddy is so outgoing, we just know he will be ok. Both were outstanding in everything at Edmunds in the 1940s
The wood and stone carving on the grounds at Patriots Hall appears to be just about complete it is a fun thing to see, and quite an attraction by our Arts Council they have a totem pole of two think one of the faces looks like someone in my class and have spotted one that reminds me of a teacher I did not like!..Go see for your self---
Nicest thing we attended this week was the celebration at Alice Drive Church a lot of history if you are interested a lot of programs are still available for you. 1305 Luring Mill Rd---phone #905-5200---they had coffee and sausage biscuits at 9---one service at 10 and it was a mixture of traditional and praise services---Lots of folks as it has just been built in the last year or two, they take advantage of a lot of new technology wonderful all for Gods Glory if you are looking for a church home you might want to visit I thank them for letting me have a part in furnishing some things about their history and the history of Alice Harby Shelor for whom The Camp Alice Road was named for now well traveled Alice Drive.
We attended the groundbreaking for the new RTA transportation center this week.it will be a preservation of the old Sumter Telephone building on Harvin and Telephone Street.most of you will remember it was the Moise Mini-Warehouse business.some of you will remember that it was once textile business..
Harry Berger came here to work for them and of course married Helen Mazursky. Also the Rosefield family once had interest there that is Dr. Ken Rosefields folks. In 1912, Sumter Telephone made half the US phones. President Taft made this statement from the rear of a train as he was running for election as U. S. President. They also made magnetos. Business was sold in late 20s and moved up north costing Sumter 400 jobs.
C. T. Mason, jr. was the prime mover in this business. Mason Croft is named for him!
Don't forget the oyster roast. As of now there is a waiting list that will be filled as some folks turn back their tickets. A real fun night and big event---
Christmas Lights at Swan Lake will be switched on November 25th will be displayed until Dec. 31st.also you might want to visit Kensington Mansion just over the Wateree River for Christmas they charge a fee only open at certain times phone # is 803-353-0456.let them tell you about a group rate for your club or church group.
Please remind everyone of Poultry Night on Thursday, November 9th at the Sumter County Exhibition Center. Sumter County still has approximately 4000 jobs associated with the poultry industry, so it is an impact for us economically. Come enjoy poultry prepared in many various ways and visit with friends and acquaintances. Contact the Chamber office (775-1231) or Clemson Extension (773-5561) for tickets which are $15.
Another Chamber event you might want to take advantage of is 17th Annual Expo at the Sumter County Exhibition Building on Liberty.November 3 & 45h.34d 11 t0 7.Saturday 9:30 to 3..I like to go.
Nice thing this week was presentation of a portrait for Colleen Yates also she was presented medals by Mayor Joe ----it was well deserved by Colleen (thanks to Betty Reese and the Gift Box). City does not present Key to City ---now it is medals enjoyed seeing some of Colleen's old friends and supporters she has been a real contributor for better things for all of Sumter and still doing it.(her daughter Cricket was here from Va. (a favorite of mine)
